S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl Remastered

It was published by several firms

GSC World Publishing
THQ
Deep Silver
Viva Media
Zoo Corporation

and produced by GSC Game world

As far as it's known the official owner of the rights is firmly in the hands of bethesda.

Bethesda?

Bit Composer published COP and I think they were involved in a dispute over rights with GSC a few years back.

I remember this, I think it turned out that bitComposer had bought the rights to use from either the film or book that Stalker used lore from, I'm not exactly sure what but straight after bitComposers announcement GSC made a statement explaining it wasn't the game itself that they'd got but something else.

At the end of the day you can develop something pretty close to Stalker if you wanted to as we've seen with Survarium but actually building the same story on another engine won't be a problem unless you try to make money in some way.

Look at the two English Language books that were made, The author had permission to do one but he then did a second without permission after he lost contact with GSC when the 2nd games development collapsed and they sacked most of there staff, At the time he took that as a case no-ones at home anymore and wrote a second book without talking to anyone at GSC which ended with GSC revoking his original permission and his having to reprint the books with the names of areas and other things changed or face legal action.
When it was all happening I quickly ordered both books so I'd have the originals which adorn one of my bookshelves now :)

There is a lot of information to back it all up if you search for it.

I'm 99% sure it was a load of rubbish because since then there's been numerous events such as the Areal Kickstarter fiasco where GSC made announcements stating they own the game and all rights and anyone ie West games using anything including the name STALKER would face legal action.

GSC's Yeltyshev all but dismisses West Games, saying that the team has neither the expertise, nor the permission, to make a STALKER game.

For the time being, Yeltyshev says that GSC is not at all concerned about West Games but will not hesitate to take action if they try to bring their STALKER game to market.

That pretty much tells us the rights to the game are still in GSC's hands.

Was one of those called Southern Comfort? I've been meaning to take a look at that one, but haven't got around to it yet.

Yes, Southern Comfort was the first and Northern Passage was the second. Same author but the first book say's by John Mason on it and the second has his real name Balazs Pataki.

Would be very interested in this. The Zone was one of my favourite gameworlds. I spent so much time there, would be great to go back.

They don't even exist anymore. They closed and removed all assets years ago.

Who GSC?

Of course they do, Yes they stopped making games for a while but they opened back up for business and have Cossacks 3 releasing this year and if it does well there's a hope they may expand there work force and do another Stalker. Although that is just conjecture the fact that GSC does exist and does still own the game rights for STALKER isn't. I just gave you a link that should have cleared it up.

you know what I have Stalker, but only played it the once, wasennt sure what I was doing, not played since.. need to install it again really now my PC is more modern :)

Just had a read through the Reddit thread and I'm not getting my hopes up. Reads like some random guy making out he's a studio to get money through kickstarter. One of those projects thats a glorified mod that never gets finished and then gets snuffed out by a lawsuit after years of waiting.

I'd love to be proved wrong, but I have seen this way too many times, especially with the Stalker franchise.

Had a look at Cossacks 3. Looks interesting, although not really my type of game. I hope it does well for them.

+1,

Whether it's modders looking for donations or so called game developers starting projects there's too many willing to make grandious claims for a quick buck.

+1 about Cossacks 3 too, And to be honest it doesn't look that modern, NPC variation is limited, I know there in uniform but they appear to all be 100% identical (within there units), Animations look smooth though, I don't tend to play this sort of game so it's up to those that do to decide how goods it is but I hope it's excellent and they sell bucket loads so they get the confidence to expand the workforce and take on a bigger project like STALKER would be..
