S1000RR - Regrets Already?

Bikes are devices inherently tied to feel, emotion and more than a little lust. What's the perfect fit for someone is often the opposite to others. If you're not feeling it, move it on for sure.

I will say I've gelled with my '15 S1000RR more than any other of the countless other bikes I've owned over the years, including my first CBR600 back in 1992, and for me it has more character and soul than any of them. Once I'd taken it to the track it just got better. As I say- it takes all sorts!

Having said that, my wife won't go anywhere near it. I've got high hopes for the KTM 990SM-T I'm picking up tomorrow as a replacement for my VFR800 commuter hack.

So I rode the new Triumph Thruxton yesterday. What a bike! It reminded me of my Bonneville, but a much more modern bike (obviously) and more appropriate for what I need now.

It's definitely my sort of bike, a lot more accessible and enjoyable to ride. Doing 60 or 70 feels fast and fun, rather than precarious. I think on the S1000RR I never felt confident, on the Thruxton I feel a lot more "planted".

I also tested the Triumph Street Twin, just to try it out. It's definitely out of the running for me, it feels a lot smaller. It was an absolute blast to ride though. If I didn't need a bike with a bit more oomph for 2up and longer distances, the Street Twin would definitely be one to consider.

Just as I was about to depart, someone turned up on their Thruxton R. It's absolutely stunning. I know it's a lot more expensive than the standard Thruxton and has fancy brakes and suspension that I don't really need - but by golly is it good looking.

Just gotta sell the BMW and I'll chat numbers with the Triumph dudes. They made me an offer for PX, but it was significantly below the £8k I want for my S1000RR. I'm in no hurry though, so patience is the name of the game now.

DM, have you ever seen/tried the Moto Guzzi v7 or v9? I happened to be shown a v7 today with pretty much no exhaust and two pipes on one side. It sounded hilariously awesome and now I want a second bike!

It's only 48hp or so, but the sound! Thump thump thump!

I am only learning to ride bikes so dont listen to me to much lol but if you dont like the 1000rr what about going for the 1000r its the naked version of the rr its tuned slightly different to the rr to have more torque lower down the rev range?

or there is the new speed triple which is also meant to be a great bike according to the youtubers that i have been watching

when i have passed my test im looking to buy a street triple i love the noise for a triumph triple i also dont like the thought of leaning over a petrol take all day on a sport bike i think that could become very tiresome

Hilarious bikes. Not comfortable and very vibey, of course! They look and sound fantastic though.

The more bikes I try, the more I like my Street Triple. It spanks the MT-10, S1000R and Tuono V4R that I have tested so far.

Do you even need any more than 110bhp/600cc? As you say, a smaller/light bike is better for the mountain roads, and unless you do lots of motorway miles is a 1000cc bike actually better than a light 600?

Have you thought of just getting a better spec 600/750cc bike - MV agusta Brutale 800/Monster 821 etc.

If you need something that's more comfy for longer tours then I think you'll struggle to find something with the handling of the street triple and the comfort and power of a 1000cc v-twin.

They are not making the Daytona after 2016.

It will have 125hp. Just like the mt-10 the new euro 4 regulations sap power from the engine.
