After what seems like months I've decided to go for a S27A750D because I'm sure it's great and the fabled 120Hz performance.

My main use will be BF3. But I will be doing some coding and I've been dreaming of all the extra screen space. :D

However it's just dawned on me that for coding work the S27A750D might not be ideal. As the resolution is not that high, all the text will just be bigger and I won't be able to get any more on the screen?

Is that the case? I guess you might be able to reduce the font size a bit, but then all the icons will be large.

I'm sure it's a dumb question but how do people set-up 1920x1080 27" displays for the desktop? Will the 1920x1080 desktop I have on my 19" monitor just be blown up to 27"?

Surely not!

1920x1080 is the same whether it's on a 27" monitor or a 19" monitor.

Everything will just appear bigger and the only way to get more on the screen would be to reduce the scaling and possibly with it the image quality.

If you want more "proper" screen real estate than you should be looking at 27" 2560x1440 or 30" 2560x1600 monitors.

:(

Oh dear. That's hardly ideal for a £500 monitor.

Being an old boy I remember the 14 inch monitors from the good old pre internet days. The thing I always like about getting a new monitor is that, as each one is larger than the last, you get up the resolution and you suddenly have a much bigger desktop and it feels like a new computer:D. But it sounds like that will all go horribly worng with the S27A750D

Any S27A750D or 27"1920x1080 owners care to comment on the image quality with reduced scaling..... it can't be that bad... can it.

There is really no comparison between the 1920 x 1080 resolution and 2560 x 1440 resolution when it comes to real estate and you can't have it all I'm afraid. The 1080p resolution is much better for 120Hz gaming because you need quite a supercomputer to achieve high framerates at 2560 x 1440 (without nullifying the advantages of increased resolution by lowering the graphics settings).

Having said that the screen has the advantage of being glossy which does bring with it an excellent level of clarity for one with a relatively high pixel pitch. I'm currently reviewing the similar S27A950D so if you'd like anything testing out in particular regarding scaling let me know. Text of a similar size to that in this post on IE9 seems quite readable at a zoom level of 70% for example, but images and the like look quite wrong - for coding it would be the text you'd be interested in I would have thought.

It is already more or less answered but you summed it up pretty much there. A magnifying glass on top of your 19" would give the same result.

I appreciate the offer. But I don't think I'm going to be able to force myself to spend £500 on that monitor. I know I put gaming as my #1 preference, but (in my head) I took a decent desktop environment as a given. Now I know why all those people said "sorry the resolution on that is a show stopper for me" - I just thought they were being pedantic .

I guess I'm an old stick in the mud, but a PC with a 19" desktop blown up to 27" would just feel like a toy.

So after months scouring the forums deciding which one to buy and three or four weeks with the S27A750D sitting in my shopping kart it's back to square one just as my finger hovers over the process order button :(.

I guess it does give me an excuse to keep lurking here :D.

Maybe I'll go back to the original plan: 3 X 23"@120Htz. Which will kind of give the best of both worlds (cost aside). I might wait until we have a sub £300 23"@120 and initially only use the central monitor for gaming so I don't need millions of graphics cards. The only real advantage of 3X S23A750D is the thin bezels, but it costs a bomb and has that silly stand so it cannot be vesa mounted. So are there any sub £300 23" 120Htz on the way?

The impetus to upgrade really came from BF3. Now that has turned out to be bit of a disappointment:( maybe I'll wait until prices drop or BF3 gets fixed.

Hi again Duff. That setup could work out well for you. Some of the 120Hz monitors display a particularly nice image as well so it's not all about the speed (i.e. don't feel like you're wasting them if you only use the central one for gaming initially). You can already get a couple of sub-£300 23" 120Hz monitors. Could you contact me via trust (button on my name)? :)
