S3 MK2, R32 MKV or 130i

It's the late models I am after an last 09 went for £16k+ but had ever option listed

The R32 I drove yesterday had the rare sunroof and have to say miss the sunroof these days.

AC off, sunroof open + v6 noise

I'm a bit out of touch with R32's (used to be a big fan) but I'd say that is overpriced. Not sure what they mean by 'anthracite leather upholstery' - the choice was either standard grey leather or darker grey Recaros!

Yep I'd definitely say that's OTT, unless they've shot up in price in the last few months. The anthracite leather is the official name for the grey, which was actually an option. It was possible to have one without leather.

Yup there was a spate of non leathers being sold near the end of their prod run I think, dealers were knocking them out silly cheap with zero options.

Believe they were going for around 18k at the time new!

R32s still demand past the 15 mark?

If you wait a few months you can get an S3 (auto) for that price. Residual value would be much better too.

Anyone spending £15k on an R32 is insane - it's just a Mk5 Golf. Ok, it's a good car, but it's nothing particularly special - just a big engined version of the Mk5 Golf. I test drove one with the GTI back to back and honestly found the GTI to be the better rounded car.

£15k for a Mk5 Golf, chuckle.

I have a deep affection for R32's. I almost bought a mk5 version but bought the mk6 GTI instead. Arguably a better car although with less character. £15k on an R32 is too much.

Amount I would spend circa £12-13 poss.

Values have firmed as of late, bit like the ole 130i/335i aspect where dealers have 06/07 plate and seek £14k+

Andover dealer has 3-4 customers on a £15k 09 plate at mo and it's not fully loaded

You have to consider though, given the strong residual now, you'll lose less money (probably) than many 12k cars, so when you look at TCO, it wouldn't eventually have cost all that much.

It's the last VW using that engine, it will always pull a premium. The only other comparables are the A3 and TT that use it, the TT costs even more in most cases and the A3s seem to be universally crap spec with bog standard radios and no toys, as well as looking identical to a 1.6

Golf GTI Edition 30 with a remap over the R32.

Only problem is they do seem to demand a high price for what they are.

I almost went for an R32 purely for the engine noise and the way it delivers it's power. I would still buy one if they were cheaper but they just command too much although the same can be said about S3's i guess :p.

If tuning is something that is being considered then the Edition 30 will get you far more bang for your money though.
