Broadband promised to unite the world with super-fast data delivery - but in South Africa it seems the web is still no faster than a humble pigeon.
A Durban IT company pitted an 11-month-old bird armed with a 4GB memory stick against the ADSL service from the country's biggest web firm, Telkom.
Winston the pigeon took two hours to carry the data 60 miles - in the same time the ADSL had sent 4% of the data.

Story

You could strap a few TB hard drives to a pigeon and fly it down the road and claim the pigeon is faster than the internet.

4Gb by pigeon took 1hr 8mins and in the same time ADSL had done 4%? but in another hour it done the remaining 96%? any one else notice this or is it just me?

They stuck 4GB of ram on a pigeon claimed it was data...?

That has to be the biggest load of crap ever.

Also, that IT Company must have been using a really crap connection.
There's much better there

Also, an hour to upload 4GB? What were they using O-o

Well Hds... to heavy! But u can get 16 and 32G memsticks now.

4G was prob to big, they could have used an old 128Mb stick, and still proven the point.

8 bits = 1 Byte
1024 bytes= 1 Kilobyte
1 megabyte = 1024 Kilobytes
1 Gigabyte = 1024 Megabytes

Winston had an effective dl speed of (4096MB in 2 hours) (4194304Kb in 7200 Seconds) 582.54 Kb/sec

Where as the Adsl connection speed was (4% of 4194304Kb (167772.16) in 7200 Seconds) 23.3 Kb/sec

An upload speed of 582K/sec is not common in the UK either so the UK also has 'slower than pigeon' broadband, using the same 'logic' as the BBC. Muppets.

(assuming you meant KB when you said Kb)

What's a memory stick then? I just imagined it to be RAM because that's what I've always known 'memory sticks' to be or referred to atleast.
