Saab 93

So to add to the mix, I take it you are referring to the Honda Accord, Mazda 6 and Ford Mondeo and you personally rate them higher than a Saab 93?

Sorry i should have expanded on my points, yes those are the models, i don't really rate the 93, had one on hire a few weeks back, went well it was some turbo petrol thing but i can't get on with the looks nor dash layout.

i recently bought the missues a saab 93 tid she loves it, and i have to say for a distance cruser its very comfy... not as nice to drive as her old eos but over distance it reminds me of an old jag...

I have an 09 plate 9-3 aero ttid hirsch. done around 13000 miles in it now and its a cracking car. You sir are wrong.

;)

Unlucky for you ;)

A friend of mine had an old Saab 9000, but the newer shape on a J plate. Stunning car, took all the abuse he threw at it and managed 220k miles. It would have done many more with a new timing chain and clutch but it wasn't worth it.

Another friend bought a W reg 9-5 about 2 months ago. He kept it for 4 weeks and part chopped it for a T plate E class merc. It was horrible, seats were uncomfortable, too low, just ergonimically useless. It also drank oil (Turbo seals). It had done 60k miles.

How the mighty have fallen.

I've got an S60 D5 and would thoroughly recommend one.

Agreed on the 95..I hated it too. Agreed on the volvo too...having driven them for 8 years previous to this car. Can't go wrong with them..no words to describe the comfort of them tbh..perhaps sublime would do it.

;)

You clearly have no interest in 50:50 weight distribution, RWD, perfect handling tested on the nurburgring etc etc.

I suggest Lexus GS.

Great call.

Lexus - the cars are well built, they are reliable, they are ridiculously well specified and the customer service is absolutely beyond anything anyone else can ever hope to manage.

In short, the perfect car buying experience...

....unless you enjoy driving :(

The new 9-5 is still gm based as it is an insignia in saab guise. Any models released after this should have koenigsegg influences.

Anyways back to the OP, the reason i drive a saab is because i like the quirky things that others hate, not to mention the fact that i just cannot get on with BMW or Audi at all. Driven an E46 3 series and hated it, don't mind the looks of BMW but audi's to me are hideous. In any case my '95 900 has been going 14 years with zero break downs and all ancilaries still work as they should.

I won't deny that the newer engines are not as good as the older engines. In an effort to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy, most of the internals were lightened making them weaker and the pcv system was altered which lead to a spate of engines dieing from oil sludging. The newer 9-3 does not suffer from these issues as they were rectified when trionic 7 was updated to 8.

What is there to hate? I can understand it doing nothing for you but to actively hate it?

I can't speak for him but there's a lot not to like. Rubbish ride quality even on SE suspension, rubbish notchy gearchange, almost absurdly over-heavy steering, SE seats a very 'meh'. Overall it's not a fantastically comfortable or enjoyable drive IMO.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the ride quality on an SE 3 Series

Agreed with the seats, though. The steering isn't heavy, it's just well weighted and not ridiculously super-light.

I have to disagree, it's bumpy and harsh, even on a smooth motorway you often experience noticeable shocks. It just leaves me wondering why a car which doesn't offer all that much stiffness during cornering feels like a stiffly sprung car in a straight line just cruising along.

You sure it doesn't have M Sport suspension?

What are you comparing it to, you still have the Colt or have you upgraded to something more sporting since?

This was one of the reasons why I liked my old 900, liked the looks and the quirky interior such as the ignition next to the gear stick.

You clearly have no interest in 50:50 weight distribution, RWD, perfect handling tested on the nurburgring etc etc.

I take it this was directed at me and yes you are right, for this particular vehicle its time around the Nurburgring does not interest me, or being RWD. I am not looking for a track car, I am looking for something to get me from A to B in comfort, safety and without hassle.

I won't deny that the newer engines are not as good as the older engines. When were these problems addressed?

Once again, thanks all for the input. It's going the way I thought it would, which is good as it all helps me come to a more educated decision. This is where I'm at with my shortlist: Volvo added, Saab 93 remains, Mazda 6 added, BMW 3 series remains (age and mileage for that money concerns me).

Honda Accord would be considered, although don't know enough about them, I don't know about the Mondeo and I'm not too keen on Lexus.

When I arrive back I'll have a hire car until I buy, so will be looking to get the car ASAP.

Bet you are a bit miffed to be returning to the UK after SA, though!

Understatement of the decade. I became an Australian citizen though so will be returning as soon as I can.
