Safari or Firefox?

Safari isn't too bad to use (can be a pain if you're used to Firefox)

Although, I tend to use Firefox more frequently and with my own theme to make it look like Safari ;)

I don't see how holding the button down is easier than two-finger clicking? It's easy enough to open the contextual menu in Firefox on a MBP

I've tried Firefox, Camino, Shiira, Opera all for reasonably periods of time (at least a week each) but I always come back to Safari. I can't quite place my finger on it but I just prefer it.

I only use one hand? Ive got the Wireless mighty mouse. I just right click using this mouse and can open a imageshack image into a new window.

If your using a Mighty Mouse, have you set right click in the system preferences?

Josh

I have a MacBook, I don't use a mouse.

Safari still can't view an imageshack link directly like firefox can though, you just click view image on firefox and it just opens the direct image link in the same window, so it fits to size etc properly, there is no option for this if you right click in safari.

O, Shouldn't you just be able to tap with 2 fingers for right click? When i use my trackpad i use this method for right click and its very fast!

Yes, but it's still not my point, it's more hassle than just doing it the firefox way, when you've got a lot of links to open in new tabs.

It's a feature I use a lot when I'm being lazy and cba using two hands to do it the fast apple + click way, and since safari doesn't really offer anything over firefox anyway, then I'm not going to use it until it does exactly what I want as standard :p

I started using Safari over Firefox in OS X when I realised that there weren't many extensions that I actually cared about.

Don't know if it's still the case in the newer versions, but in Safari 2.x tabbed browsing was disabled by default and you had to enable it in the preferences. A lot of people think Safari can't do tabbed browsing! I'm not keen on the brushed-metal look but UNO takes care of that.

The main reasons I like Safari are

  • Speed - Noticeably quicker than Firefox.
  • Nicer scrolling behavior than Firefox.
  • It uses the proper OS X lists, buttons, etc. and they behave as you'd expect for keyboard shortcuts and navigation.
  • Integrates with the built-in OS X services such as keychain and cmd-ctrl-d dictionary.

Camino is a waste of time, IMO. Don't see what gap it's trying to fill.

I downloaded Safari 3 Beta for Windows yesterday and whilst it is quick all text is much bolder than IE7. Is this the same on a Mac or is it just a Windows issue?

I'm going to take a stab at a guess as to why this is. In OS X the font-smoothing / anti-aliasing routines are by default a lot more heavy-duty than those in Windows XP and Vista, particularly if you're used to ClearType which is based around smoothing by means of the layout of the red, green and blue sub-pixels on TFT monitors (hence why there's a slightly colourful 'fringe' to characters in Windows when this is enabled).

I'm guessing that when Apple ported Safari they also ported some fairly low-level parts to their rendering engine, including (perhaps) their anti-aliasing routines. Quite why they wouldn't use the built-in Windows ones I don't know, but it could be down to the desire to make their browser 'stand out' from the competition by its slightly different appearance. I would guess the same is true of iTunes' non-standard UI on Windows :)

That's definitely the case - everything uses that method in OS X.

I've come to like it, but it is jarring in Windows when it looks different from the rest of the OS. You may be able to tone it down to the 'Light' setting in the Safari preferences, but it will probably still look a bit perculiar to you.

Here is the latest Safari Beta 3.0.2 if anyone needs a link.

Has it solved the text-rendering issues? (For those who reported problems)

EDIT- Installed through software update and much more stable on a couple sites that crashed it before, seems a tad faster.

I tried Safari both on OSX and XP but Firefox is like an old jumper so that's what I'm using now. I use it on OSX, XP and kubuntu.

I've only found at work a few issues that require IE due to the MS workspaces other MS technology being used.
