Safe overclock for a 5870?

I have a sapphire and a VFX 5870 in xfire, is there a 'safe' margin of overclock?

The full whack in CCC should be fine 900/1300. Keep an eye on the top cards temps though.

Up to 1.35v is claimed to be be safe, most people are happy to let the cards game at 80-85c and the GPU will throttle itself at 95c+

I think 900/1250 is pretty safe. I believe the ram is rated to 1250 anyway and Ive never heard of a 5870 not hitting 900

if the CCC overclock tester comes back ok can i call it good?

Not necessarily, if I clock it too high the CCC tester can sometimes still report okay, but in other tests or games it artifacts / crashes quickly.

To be safe, when you get the max in CCC just go down like 5 MHz on each and test some games, if it ever crashes, decrease the clocks a bit.

They should do 900/1300 no problem, as said before your main issue will be the top cards temperatures so keep an eye on them

I dont agree with testing with furmark, it stresses a card way beyond what a normal game would IMHO, if it runs my games without crashing it's a stable overclock in my book.

I agree i have used furmark in the past but will never use it again just OTT. In 2010 alone i have had 5 5*** cards ans o/c every one without it and been stable and overclock crash free everytime.

900/1300 should be fine
I got my HD5870 a week ago and have it clocked at 1000/1300 and plays games fine no crashing ect... had to up the volts to 1275

my 5870 (sapphire reference) is @ 925/1275 without a problem. Stock Voltage.

temps hover around 75-80 load, max 84 load. Perfectly stable so far

Not that there's any way for a vendor to tell you've been OCing the card anyway, so it's a moot point
They can tell if you've flashed it though...

If you dont fancy overclocking your 5870'xf that high run them at 875 / 1250, thats Vapour 5870 settings my card never go's over 64'c. Also make sure you have good air flow in you case as the top card runs at higher temps !!!!.
