Safe overclocking limits you are happy with on your vid card

Did you trying changing some of the configuration file settings for msi afterburner? It is locked by default.

Can you explain a bit more about that? I think that's what I'm getting with my 5870, It simply refuses to budge over 900Mhz core, if I set it to anything higher it just drops back to 900Mhz.

I thought there may be a bios lock on it and I've been thinking about flashing the bios to overcome it.

If I can do it with afterburner, I won't bother flashing.

1.) Open the MSIAfterburner.cfg with Notepad
2.) Change the "enable unofficial overclocking" Value of 0 to 1.
3.) Select "File" and select "Save as".
4.) When the save window pops up select "All Files" in the "Save as type" box and save!
It wil ask you to confirm the "Overwrite of the file" Select "yes".

follow it to the letter and it will lift the overclocking limits and allow voltage control on some cards

no problem don't forget to make 2 profiles saves one for browsing and one for gaming that way it helps keep the life of your cards instead of running the overclock 24/7, no point running 950/1200 just to use firefox is there :D
