Safe to plug in a monitor while the PC is on?

The missus had her pc on, and the adapter for the dvi card out to vga cable arrived in the mail so we wanted to plug in her second monitor (dual screen). I just wondered if we had to kill the PC first :)

Am I stupid as I plug anything in regardless of whether it's on or not...

Back in the good old days, plugging in things like ps2 keyboards and mice could fry the ports on the motherboard every now and again. It wasn't really until USB that things were claimed to be hot pluggable. With regard to ps2 I've never fried one myself but have seen enough motherboards with dead connections to assume it is possible and does occur.

Well I never :O

I remember hot plugging AT connectors etc....

Ah well. It won't change me. Luckily for me, the only cables I have to change are mains (which I don't turn off incidently). BANG.

Hi, I would never ever plug anything into a motherboard aside from usb or firewire whillst it was live, that is turned off and the power lead disconnected. All you'd need is one spike and the video card, or motherboard if the video chip is integrated could be trashed. False economy and really not worth the risk....
