Safe to run windows 7 as main OS?

The idea that the OP (sorry nothing personal to you) main interest in Windows 7 is mealy to run games shows that they have no idea on what a BETA Programme is.

Although I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment of your post I think that running games on a BETA OS that is designed to run games on (which Windows is) is perfectly fine and probably one of the better ways to test the OS. :)

I'm using it as my main OS with the knowledge that it will contain bugs and may be destructive to data. All of my data is held on a NAS unit off of the computer, so if I lose everything then I'm back to installing XP again and I've not lost anything.

If I dual boot, then I'll be flicking back and forth and I won't use many of the features of the new OS, which would defeat the purpose of giving it a good test.

Ars has an interesting writeup on 7beta and has come to the conclusion that I’ve been thinking about ever since learning more about 7 – that it “is” Vista with a few changes here and there.

Why do people think 7 was going to be anything other than this?

To me, Windows 7 is what Vista should have been :)

That's only because Vista has a huge shoe to fill - coming from XP to Vista was a monumental task for user and developer alike to use and support - As Ars puts it, Vista beared the brunt of it but it has paid off because ever since SP1 and makers releasing proper Vista drivers there hasn't been a single major complaint about Vista performance or stability.

7 will continue this trend from day 1 because it has no huge shoe to fill, just a snug shoe to polish.

I'll probably be avoiding 7 as I only recently upgraded from 32bit Vista to 64bit so will most likely keep Vista installed until the next version of Windows after 7.
Unless I get a cheap/free copy of 7 Ultimate through work for example (we have many licenses of MS software in VLK).

On the whole yeah but XP also had better compatibility for older games that 2000 didn't which was quite a big thing back then!

That isn't true. You clearly have zero experience in software development, and are too used to using Web-2.0 "BETA" labelled products.
You quite clearly don't know me very well. Don't try to sound like you do. It only serves to highlight your ignorance.

Thats exactly what it is. Like i've been saying from the start.
A more appropriate name would be Windows Vista SE :P

Got it installed on my main rig and it is fabulous to use, however you can tell it is a beta.
For instance, because certain AV drivers arent installed (Avast to name but one), it BSOD's randomly at you due to a "Tx.sys" or similar error.
Gadgets is also broken for me. But in general it is very nice, just not the polished article (which goes without saying - BETA!).

Definitely good signs and i am very much looking forward to it coming out officially, but as for a normal desktop - i'd play with it but on a day to day basis i wouldnt bother, with 7000 anyway.

BTW: Driver support on Windows 7 is brilliant, picked up my Audigy 2 ZS, installed drivers and it all worked magically - suprising for MS.

Startup problems, needs to do LKGC or F8 menu to get it to work
Media Center borked - WER causing internet to lock up
Random Crashing issues

Glad I still got XP as a backup :p

In all fairness your comment did seem rather silly and bordering on the plain wrong as has been pointed out.

maybe, but I wasn't commenting on wether I was right or wrong, I was commenting on the ignorant asumption of my level of knowledge in software development. :)

If you're prepared to deal with and properly report any issues you come across then I don't see why you can't run it as your main OS.

But you need to have the mindset that it won't always do everything you ask it to. Any other mindset and you're better sticking to Vista or XP.

Personally I think it is laughable the amount of "omg Windows 7 is soooo fast" comments that are all over the web. It is just the Vista SP1 kernel more or less :D These people should really just give Vista a try already...

Don't read that as me knocking Windows 7. Definately not. I'm just saying that Windows 7 is intended to be a minor point release to Vista. It is not going to have massive sweeping changes to the kernel or anything. This is why it is, actually, version 6.1 of Windows. Where Vista was 6.0. It is also why people seem to be surprised that Vista drivers are working just fine on Windows 7. It is the same reason why 2000 drivers worked fine on XP. Because XP was just 2000 with themes, effectively.

Also another thing that is funny is the amount of tech articles that seem to think XP was well received in 2001. Erm no? It was hated just as much as Vista was. It took TWO service packs before people started to like it :D

No? It is a beta OS. Anyone that feels the need to ask whether it is safe to run Windows 7 as their main OS clearly doesn't understand the forces at play and should steer clear. Same reason you don't invest in the stock market unless you really know what you are doing...

I'm sorry dude, but W7 runs much faster on my laptop than Vista does (T5500 and 2gb).

I agree partly that if someone is asking the question then the answer is most likely no. But your post said that anyone saying otherwise is also wrong, and that just isn't the case.
You can't speak for everyone in this matter, and just because you feel it is not fit for a main OS doesn't make that fact.

I'm using it as a main OS to ensure I use as much of it as I would any OS. I'm also reporting issues when I find them. If it breaks, then I reinstall. If it becomes unusable in some fundamental way for me then I'll go back to XP.
How does this make me in the wrong in running it as my main OS? As far as I see, it doesn't.
