Anyone on here took a large salary cut to pursue a different career?

Currently been doing my existing job 8 years earning circa 40k

Considering a different career which would start on 22k but would rise inclemently up to 36k after 6 years

Anyone else made such a bold move?

yup, if it is something that you'll find more interesting or perhaps something you might benefit from more in the long term then just go for it... work shouldn't just be about money

I gave up a big variable component of my pay to move into an R&D role, basic salary increased a bit but it took several years for overall compensation to get to the point it was before I made the move.

6 years and you'd still be earning less than you do currently?

I'm assuming that the new career is something which is a passion of yours as its obviously doesn't make sense from a financial point of view.

I took a reasonable dip in salary when I moved from retail to accountancy, but within a year I was earning more than I would have had I remained in retail, so not comparable.

Financially I could afford it but it alters a few things

Wouldn't be able to run the car I do currently (Cayman S) and house hunting at moment so house cost would have to drop

You will regret it after 6-12 months when the novelty of the new career wears off..

Do you enjoy your current job ? If you do, stay put.

This, having less more is much harder than it sounds, it brings so much more pressure, you have to aim lower with what you have become used to, look at your car for instance, a Cayman S to what? Something a lot duller id assume.

House, in the back of your mind thinking, well I could have afforded that one if I stuck where I was, it wasn't that bad....

Money makes the world go round, especially when dropping 20k as good as.

£40k to £30k then yes.

£40k to £22k, losing the car and massively altering house plans (whic can have long term affects) then no.

Out of interest what is your current job and what job are you looking to do?

Never done it, would only consider it to move to a career I found genuinely interesting, perhaps some sort of sports / gaming journalist or similar. A gamer I played in a team with for a couple of years has subsequently managed to forge a career travelling the world doing eSports commentary / analysis etc, but he wasn't giving up a 'normal' career to pursue that.
