Salvage/Building a PC

Thanks for the amendments guys. Both of you put in faster memory, was I reading the wrong thing when I looked it up it only said 1333 or 1600? SSD deal will probably have finished when I come to buy but that won't be a major change.

I will check out those coolers tomorrow, watched a build video earlier and I might look for something to go in the top panel but I'll have to look into the whole intake/output story to know which way round to have things and come back with perhaps some extra budget :D

Cheers again

Yep, it's just a little bit more vague in the description on this board, most list what levels you can 'OC' the memory to (generally topping out around 3000Mhz), this one just says "OC Possible".

If you are thinking of something like the H100/i, then the 2 external bays will need to be removed.
I would also use your existing 1600 ram and save £50+.
I'm actually doing a build in that Aerocool case this weekend(for another member) and using the H100i. Just bear in mind with this case, that you wont be able to do xfire, should you wish to, in the future.

Cheers guys lot of help around on here :)

I was thinking about removing the external bays anyway and having the external drive away in a drawer 99% of the time. Will be better for air inside and looks on the front. The RAM I'd rather just get now tbh, I'm not sure what I'll do with the old PC and I'd prefer to not have to get the old stuff back out when it's probably cramped around other parts if I need to do something with the old one later on and then either get it back or add the new stuff in later. Dual GPU has never really been on my radar, that's why I only went for 550W when I upgraded the PSU last year. Don't think I'd try it in such a small space anyway. Would be great to hear what you think about using it though. The guy in the video had a H100i as well but I think that may be overkill for me.

Doing the build in Leicester, on Saturday. He's got the Orange one, without the window. Says he's really impressed. Looking forward to it. So, I'll update you with my thoughts on Sunday.

Barring various deals which may come up I think I'm all set apart from the cooler. Looked at no end over the weekend and I'm probably making it more hassle than it should be for what the differences are. The Mount Doom in one of the posts is great but pretty huge, will it definitely fit? I also looked at some all in one such as Corsair H90, they have so many models but I looked there first as it was a 140mm. Also looked at more air coolers, might be a bit cheaper and space saving to get one with just one 'tower' and add another fan for push/pull? Looks like it would work pretty well with the air coming in the front and out the back. Not sure where the top comes in and if I should put something there, come up with all sorts of different ways to have things depending on what I end up with but I'm not sure which are the best, so any suggestions on which bits to get and how to set it up would be great.

Thanks

Just a final check so I can start buying before the weekend. Only thing I thought I might change is swap the cooler for Phanteks PH-TC12DX, extra tenner but I like the idea of the push/pull setup without being to big like the mount doom type. Is that a good move and any final amendments, I don't have any misc. items like thermal paste etc. Main thing is double check that it will all fit together.

Thanks guys

I would personally look at choosing Windows 7 over 8. Of course you are looking at no financial difference. Understandably with a new PC, it is a nice thought to have the latest OS, but IMO Windows 8 is terrible. Just my opinion, i'm sure others will disagree.

You won't see a huge difference going with a push/pull setup. If you don't want a big air cooler you could go for a Corsair H60 or similar, as that is around the same price as the Phanteks.

Thanks both, I will have to check out Windows review then as I assumed it was all hunky dory once they put the start button back in 8.1.

I looked at AIO coolers like the H60 but I wasn't sure it would be wise as it would either be attached at the back and the only exhaust (so air would be already warm from other components before it passed through?), or on top in addition to the fan already at the back, that would need switching to the mesh top panel which I had hoped to avoid unless I had to, just for cosmetic reasons.

Have updated as I think some deals have changed, SSD and memory. One of the build threads I looked at used a H80i with two fans so not sure if I should add an extra fan if I go that way, or even two so they match and one isn't doing more than the other (if that's a 'thing'?).

Think I might need to add data cables as well but I'm not sure which. I could borrow them from my current PC but one is flat and one is a right angle.

Cheers Idleman, all ordered now. Remembered I need a wifi card but I'll just borrow the one I'm using now. Couple of budget slip ups as I went for the h80i cooler in the end and the 250Gb SSD

At least you have a decent system and something to keep you busy over Easter.
Have fun. :D
And, don't forget to install OS on ssd in ACHI mode, before connecting your hdd.
