i followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpSamba to set up my shares. the problem i am now having is that:

1. when i log on to my account i get this error:
Quote:
Could not look up internet address for myles-XPC.
This will prevent Xfce from operating correctly.
It may be possible to correct the problem by adding
myles-XPC to the file /etc/hosts on your system
Continue or Retry
retrying fails everytime, but if i continue everything runs as normal.

2. my shares are nowhere to be found, when clicking on the /media folder it takes ages to load and the shares arent there, however, in amarok, when i go to add new directories, i can access my samba shares, but if i try to do it the whole program crashes.

is there a problem with my fstab? or have i done something else wrong?
im still quite new to ubuntu so take it easy on me! :P

add myles-XPC 192.168.*.* (the static ip) to /etc/hosts.

For example

type this in terminal -> sudo nano /etc/hosts

and write your machine name, seperated by a space, then the local ip of your other machine.

eg. myles-XPC 192.168.7.10

Control X to save
Yes to confirm same file name

127.0.0.* localhost
127.0.1.* myles-XPC.HOME

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

thats what etc/hosts looks like, so do i add
myles-XPC 192.168.2.*
that to the end?

will read through through that other guide. ta

mount error: could not find target server. TCP name Server/Music not found

yeah, as long as you've not starred out the ips. Probably you haven't but internal ip addresses present no risk to security so you could have posted them here.

Maybe you know but if you do smbtree from terminal, it will report shares.

cheers for the help. a couple of little problems tho.

1. im still gettin the error message when logging on.
