Same GPU won't work in first PCIe slots in 2 different motherboards?

Hi Kissenger, I've just read through your thread, sorry to hear about your saga.
Could I ask you to go into bios with the gpu in 2nd slot, and configure 1st slot to x8 only.
i'm not sure if this is a hardware jumper or in bios. but once youve done that try the card in your 1st slot.

Just to explain my reasoning .... 1st the original board having a fault , and also the card working at x8. i'm wondering if either the gpu or mb have taken each other out maybe now the gpu will only work on x8 .

my only other advice might be to try a bios reflash on the gpu. if you've had experience with that.

Hello Mags.

I've just flashed the GPU BIOS and although the flash happened without a hitch and the card still works in slot 2, it's still not recognised in slot 1.

I will try setting the first slot to x8 but I can't seem to find that option in BIOS and there's nothing about it in the manual.

So I had a (rare) brainwave: it occurred to me that although I don't have a spare GPU to try I do have a PCIe x1 sound card... so I tried that in the 'dead' PCIe slot and it works just fine.

Safe to say the problem was the GPU all along? If so, I'll start the RMA tomorrow.

it's a strange one. that's for sure, sorry about the delay, ive been a way a few days.

could be a bit of chicken and egg. shame you don't have a friend you can borrow a gpu off, and try it in slot 1, as x1 isn't a very good test.

It could be an issue with one or more of the PCIe lanes on the GPU itself, e.g. when it's running in 8x mode in a secondary slot it's fine, but when trying to run 16x one or more broken lanes is coming into play.

The only way to really prove this though is with a different GPU.
