Hi lads,

The upgrade itch has taken hold I'm afraid and its all about the monitor :)

My Dell 2407 has served me well since 2007 but its time to move on to something more up-to-date.

PC use is 70% gaming 30% general browsing etc etc

I dont watch movies or do any photo work

After muchos digging around I have came down between two choices

Dell U2410

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-036-DE&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=

Lovely IPS panel, 1920x1200 res, and most review sites say its damn good for gaming (response times and colour accuracy)

OR

Samsung S27A950D

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-166-SA&groupid=17&catid=1120&subcat=

Gorgeous design, 120Hz support, bigger screen than U2410 (albeit 16:9 and 1080p), supposed to be superb colour accuracy for a TN panel

Any thoughts or input would be appreciated as I'm seriously struggling between these two bad-boys.

PS Ignore price difference for the sakes of recommendations and I run a GTX 480 which I know aint compatible with the Samsung 3D but I couldnt care less about 3D...used it on a mates PC and hated it!!!

Cheers

Not sure why you'd pay so much for an IPS panel when you aren't doing anything on it that goes to its strengths (colour accuracy for photo work and wide viewing angles for tv watching etc).. so I'd say its a fairly easy choice of the Sammy..

Was leaning towards the IPS panel because many TN's suffer from poor colour accuracy or "washed-out" look...didnt want my games looking like ****

Have you considered the newer and cheaper U2412M?

This thread contains all the reviews for that model - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18305748

Great, as if it wasnt hard enough already :D...a 3rd choice....but you're input is sound, the 2412M does seem to be a very good monitor for the price.

I suppose I could live without the wide gamut and the card reader on the U2410 as long as the gaming performance on the 2412M was as good (or better)

I cannot recommend S27A950D for 3D gaming as it does my head in after awhile. For 2D gaming, however, it is spectacular. It even beats my old 24" NEC IPS panel. If gaming is what you do majority of the time, then S27A950D should serve you well and keep you happy for quite sometime to come.

I'm in the same position. After carefully considering the various models I came to the conclusion I didn't need to change my monitor.
I say change instead of upgrade because the only thing I would want is 120hz or better colour accuracy (can't really have both here I'm afraid). I don't give two hoots about 3D, the technology just isn't impressive enough for me.

My conclusions? Buying a new monitor for slightly better colour accuracy or a 120hz panel with various draw backs but an insane price didn't in itself seem sane to me.

I'm waiting until the 120hz panel market matures.

Yep, I just wanted to keep my old 24" samsung after trying a few 120hz monitors but then it died so that forced my hand.
Yes, 3d is naff, no idea why people want it but 120hz lcd monitors are a nice side effect.
I have to disagree with pakjai, the samsung is not spectacular, it is below average at best. Horrible glare, very very washed out colour and detail, high input lag, lots of banding, gamma too high, it's the worst monitor I tried out of the lot.

Each to his own I guess. For me, the colour for gaming is very impressive and vibrant and I don't have no lag whatsoever. I suspect that you may have used a faulty panel. I've not experienced any input lag, banding or gamma problems. It was a little bright at first but that was easy to sort out just like any montors out there. Nothing the settings cannot handle. The glare wasn't too bad (but it depends on how and where you sit your screen. I have it facing away from the window and other direct light source).

The only problems I have is a slight backlight bleed and the 3D for not being spectaular enough to game on for more than an hour.

I love my S27A950D.

Pros
120Hz is EPIC for fasted paced gaming. Just make sure your PC can supply 120+ FPS to get the max benefit.
Fast response and no input lag that i can detect.
27inch is much more immersive than 24.
1920*1080 is no issue @ 27inch to my eyes.
Great colours at default settings.
Super small bezels.
Super thin screen
Funky looking base (may be a taste thing)
2D -> 3D conversion is an interesting addition.
In general 3D is an interesting distraction. Some slower games (avoid competitive FPS) look EPIC in 3D.
Glasses come with unit.

Cons
Expensive
no 3D Vision.
with NV gfx cards no frame sequential 3D, and screen has to be manually changed to / from 3D modes.
Less workspace than similarly priced 27inch screens with higher res.
