Samsung 1.5TB Eco errors

Hi all,

I installed the above drive a few weeks ago and have been filling it since.

I have over 300gig free but now when I try and unpack anything it gives a I/O error ("disk is probably full").

These aren't big files I am unpacking (winrar), around 375meg.

The drive is formatted in NTFS.

I did have a problem installing the drive, I was getting an error formatting it in windows so had to boot to Acronis Disk Director and use that.

I haven't looked at the windows log or done a full scan for bad blocks yet, I had to leave for work... I hate having to leave a problem.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

If it gave error when formatting it first time you should have run full drive tests then... what would be actually good to do to any HDD before taking it into use.

Also is it system drive or storage drive?
(check space reserved by system restore)

Its a storage drive. Yes, that would have been smart but I was just so excited to start filling it with media...

Ill run some tests on it when I get home tonight.

I have a few boot CDs of utilities but I haven't used any HD utilities for a few years, does anyone have any software recommendations?

I've tried the Samsung tools but hutil doesn't appear to support the drive and the other one doesn't see it.

Last night I ran windows disk scanner which didn't find anything (just quick scan) then I booted to dos and ran seatools (seagate but you can use on other drives) quick and long scans.

This morning both were marked as "PASS" with no obvious errors that I could see.

I rebooted the machine and the drive has gone from 370gig free to 4.5gig free. Something to do with block size or just reporting the free space incorrectly?! No idea.

I've left it doing the windows surface scan now.

Cheers, I'll have a look at those if ES-Tool is no good. I just found that this is the latest Samsung diagnose utility, the other two I tried appear to be older.

I did check the SMART status last night and everything was fine. Even if I get this fixed I'm going to be wary of this drive now :(

I've ran ES tool and it passed all the quick tests, Ill do a full surface scan overnight but something screwy is going on...

50.8GB free of 1.36TB but the properties of all folders (inc. hidden)

Size: 972GB (1,044,734,366,861 bytes)
Size on disk: 972GB (1,044,739,018,752 bytes)

Well ES-tool, Samsungs own, just told me there is nothing wrong with the drive. I guess I'll have to try and back this data up, reformat and scan again?

There are three platters in the drive so if one was knackered surely that would mean 500GB (465.66GB) was unavailable?

For the sake of thread completeness...

I installed the latest nforce driver, backed up the data and did a full format on the drive. It appears to be fine now, free space is reporting correctly and the data is going back on now.

I think I'm having the same problems as you. It gets to randomly near 26.7% full, HD tune etc report errors but Windows doesn't. Unpacking/doing anything with files fails but swapping the drive to an external caddie renders it perfectably usable. Very very odd.

The Samsung DOS program returns normal results.
