Motherboard: MSI K8MM-V

Already has 1x 80GB IDE and 1x 200GB SATA

Plugged in 1TB drive
Doesn't show up in bios, bios raid utility or Vista
Change cables, still nothing
No jumpers to limit to 1.5gbps speeds
Download Samsung tool to restrict drive speed
This boots from CD - still won't detect the drive.

Faulty drive?

Does the drive spin up at all? You can usually hear it quite clearly. Have you swapped the mobo connector with your current working sata drive? Just check the obv like you said, different power cable etc.

Spins up - used existing, working cables and ports

hmm maybe it is just a rubbish mb - although the samsung software you boot into apparently detects the drive on any sata controller, which it then gives you the option of using it as sata 1

I've got the same drive, and I've just had the same/similar problem with a decent DFI mobo. It's been working fine for the few weeks I've had it, and last night I was playing some COD 5 when I heard two loud clicks - then the game paused, then continued. I walked away for five minutes and when I returned the computer had reset to the bios menu with the obligatory no hard drive present error. I couldn't get it to work so I stuck it in the fridge for five minutes. Managed to get it working again, and got the data off it, but now I don't trust it. Any ideas where to go from here? It's working fine at the moment, but I don't know whether to rely it. I did notice it was getting toasty in my case as there isn't a fan near it, so I'll sort that out before xmas hopefully. But are there any diagnostics I can run?

My mate has the same drive, and his is approximately 22 degrees, mine was closer to 40! Likely to be the heat causing the issue?

It's nothing to do with a faulty drive. It is simply the fact that the Samsung F1 is not supported correctly on the via chipset i'm guessing this mobo uses.

Nothing you can do except buy a new motherboard / controller card.
