I really need some help with this one guys

Just been copying some data from my 1tb WD external drive to a Samsung 2tb (HD204UI) hard drive sat in a Sharkoon Plug & Play Dock.

I was copying a large video file around 3gb when I the windows warning window popped up on the right had side of the screen saying "windows delay write error" you may lose data if something something, please try to save the file on another drive or something along those lines.

SOI unplugged the USB cable and tried copying the file again only to be presented with just a G: Drive in my computer (I had it named as Samsung) and now when I click on it says drive not formatted, do you wish to format now

Just to mention that I've got 1.2tb of data on this drive and no I haven't backed it up, theres music, some videos and more importantly photos of my family from years and years :(

I'm Using Windows XP OS

I know the data is still on there because it's not formatted or anything.

Please please Please could someone help out.

Cheers

oh dear that aint good. there are programs any software you can use to get stuff off it thats been deleted, but not sure about a whole HDD.

things like "recuva"

Try connecting the drive directly to the mobo instead of the sharkoon, the sharkoon could be faulty and corrupting your drive.

hi guys, cheers for the replies

ok was up until 6am with this, I've got some data back but some is missing.

I used testdisk to what i thing repaired the header data, this took ages but I finally got it reading as a drive again however things are corrupt, some files are there some are not, i had some mkv files on there and when playing them now they break up and are blocky, photos also are like this, some blocky some half a photo :/

But theres still lots of files missing? i can't work this out but I've been reading that these drives had an issue with the firmware.

Haven't got lunux nor a desktop (i only use laptops now) but i've tried another drive in my sharkoon and it seems fine, but I've ordered another one anyway to keep as a spare just incase the sharkoon is at fault.

I've just got hold of a copy of Easeus data recovery software from my dad (his IT dept use it at work and he says it's good)

Just running it now, been running 4 hours and still only 28% complete at checking but I'm hoping this can recover all the files completely, if not I'm screwed!

Trouble is i need to move them across to another drive so I'm on the look out for either two 1tb drives or 2tb (not the same model as this), I've got a samsung 1tb F3 drive and thats been fine.

Only got this Samsung F4 204UI drive in November 2010 so i'm really upset becauase I moved all my other media (memory sticks and dvds) to this drive.

If this has learned me one thing it's to backup!

Just hope this other program can recover the missing data

Had you updated the firmware?

no i didnt update the firmware before this happened, didnt even know about the problem until this.

If I can recover all the data then I wont be using the drive anymore as how can you trust it wont do it again, even if you backup it's still a headache reformatting and re-putting files back on.

Just reading up on the Samsing 1tb F3 spinpoints, they seem to be the best 1tb drives 7200rpm too (these 2tb are only 5400rpm)

Think you right bledd, everytime i buy a hard drive now I'm buying two (one for backup) and the most important files I'm going to save to dvdr.

It sounds like to me the drive went pop. I would be ripping it out of the caddie and putting it into a desktop.

The smart issue these drives have sometimes isnt affected in USB caddies as not all of them allow smart to be sent back. Also Samsung have fixed this issue donkeys ago as no new cases of it have appeared recently.

Just ordred two Samsung 1tb F3's to sort out this mess, Easeus software is still scanning, going to take another 33 hours it says, then it will let me start to backup (i hope)
