So I've bought the SSD and done a fresh install of Win7 and all my programs no problem.

My old HDD is as it was before, also with a Win 7 install, programs and all my documents.

Using the adapter supplied, I am trying to connect the old HDD to I can copy over just my documents to the SSD, format the HDD, then move the documents back to the latter.

But nothing is detected when I'm connecting the HDD with the adapter, although the blue light on the adapter comes on.

From reading around the net, the only thing that could be the problem is that not enough power is being supplied, as the HDD is a 3.5" which uses more power than a laptop 2.5". Can anyone confirm please?

Correct. USB can only supply 5v which is the power rail 2.5" drives use. The 12v power bigger drives use won't be doable over USB.

Easiest way would be to switch your old main drive back into PC, boot off that with the Samsung drive on the USB cable now it's all aligned and formatted etc and copy stuff over then switch back. If you REALLY don't want to take the 2.5" back out again then just open case and plug the old drive in without screwing it down and tell it to boot off the old drive in the bios. Won't cause any problems.
