Howdy,

So I have just placed an order for a Samsung 840 Evo 1TB and it should be here tomorrow.

I am currently downloading a copy of Windows 8.1 from work as I believe Windows 8 has more tweaks and can get more out of SSD's than Windows 7...?

I know that my ageing mobo won't get the most out out the SSD as it is only Sata 2 but is there anything else people do to get the most out of their SSD's? AHCI is already turned on and it will be a fresh install of Windows 8.1

Cheers,

Doug

install samsungs own magician tool and enable rapid mode,it will help boost speeds for sata2 ports

Good stuff!

I did a bit of reading on the Rapid mode and got mixed feelings, is it that it stores some data in RAM so it is ready to be used?

I guess I may see more of a benefit to this being on Sata 2, will look into it :D

Theoretically it should help on SATA2 but I've never tested it in link bottlenecked situations - SATA 3 often has enough bandwidth that its only really useful over what SATA3 manages in niche situations.

AFAIK the Samsung one only works on Samsung drives but there are other 3rd party caching software that can do similiar IIRC i.e. PrimoCache/FancyCache with any drive.
