Samsung 840 Raid 0 bad performance

I've been running these drives in Raid 0 for quite some time now, but recently noticed poor performance in games I play like Payday 2. The game will stutter heavily and FPS will drop to half of what it normally is, whenever there is a lot of action going on.

I copied the game over to my Raid 0 Velociraptors and the issue isn't there.

I ran an HDTune benchmark and got this result. Does this highlight an issue somewhere?

I would say something is up with that. Here is my raid stripe on an amd board. Two mixed drives, one crucial m4 and one kingston v300

I honestly don't get it. Both drives are identical, except one has a slightly newer firmware than the other one.
I tried updating the firmwares to the latest, but I just got some dumb version mismatch error, even though I downloaded the correct firmware file.

Are these Evos that are affected by the performance degradation thing?

IIRC there are issues with firmware updates on drives in RAID got a feeling they both need to be on the same version or you have to pull the whole RAID apart (destroying any data), update them separately and rebuild the RAID.

have you changed HD tune from 64k to 8mb under file, options and benchmark?

it will give you lower speeds if this is not changed to 8mb

I didn't try that, no. I've given up anyway. I took the 250gb Samsung EVO SSD out of my laptop and put that in my computer instead. Hopefully I wont see anymore issues.

It is possible that game files are fragmented by whatever was downloading them. I was copying files downloaded by ubisoft UPlay from 2x840 RAID 0 to Intel 750. Copy speed was 40MB/s. Non-fragmented files copied at 1GB/s.

Try copying files back so SSD array to see if performance improves.

Yeah I tried that multiple times and the result was the same. I've also just tried the game with my single 840 EVO drive and the issue is still there. Im beginning to think this game simply does not like SSD's. It's fine on my Velociraptors.

how much free space is on SSDs vs velociraptors when you test? SSD tend to slow down as you fill them up. Check if TRIM feature is enabled in windows, this could be another reason for slow SSD.

Yeah, it was about half full, TRIM was definitely enabled. I did some digging and apparently its better to have steam games (Payday 2 in particular) on a HDD, because of the way it updates. It re-writes the entire game from a cache each time it updates, which can cause unnecessary wear on an SSD

840 ssd's suffer the degrading issue, have you tried samsungs tool to scan and update them?

I don't have payday 2 but my entire steam is on ssd.
