Just an observation really. I bought my 830 128GB last year and it's read and write speeds are respectively 520MB/s and 320MB/s, which I still think is very good.

Looking at the current Samsung 840 series SSDS, the 840 is only 120GB, 530MB/s read, but a shockingly slow 130MB/s write speed. Only the 840 Pro 128GB tops mine with 530mb/s and 390mb/s, and that's fairly negligible, but nevertheless an improvement.

The 840 Pro 256 and 512GB have 520MB/s write speeds compared to 400MB/s on the 830 256 and 512GB, so a solid improvement there.

Were the Pro versions of the 840 always intended to be the actual upgrade to the 830's which never had a pro version, and the non pro 840's are not intended as upgrades? Although the non pro 840's improve marginally on the read speed by 10MB/s.
 
The two versions of the 840 use different types of NAND which is why the price, capacity and performance are different. There are many online reviews which compare them in excruciating detail.

The natural direct successor to the 830 is the Pro version.

Shocking on paper, or in a benchmark.

My previous SSD was an Intel X-25M 80GB. The write speed was horrific, a maximum of about 75MB/s. The funny thing is, in all the 3 years I owned that SSD, having done 3 or 4 Windows 7 fresh installs, and using it virtually every day, I always found it's performance very good. Windows installs were much faster than on a mechanical hard drive, despite the terrible write speeds.

My current 840 250GB also has "slow" write speeds, only half of what the Pro version is capable of. It does seem to install Windows a little faster than my old SSD, but a full install is not something I do very often. Installing apps or saving data seems very quick to me.
 
You mostly won't notice the write speeds (unless you're writing a lot obviously) as it's mainly the read speed that's going to affect you

So it'll be mostly noticed in benchmarks but i can't imagine much elsehwere

Well, the 840 offers tremendous VFM. For around £120 you get 250GB of space and similar or even faster performance than the 830. OK, the memory won't last as long........

1.1TB written in 4 months, which includes a clone from my old SSD, a fresh install of Windows 7, installation of Skyrim (twice), Bioshock, Hitman, Farcry 3 etc., and daily use. Wear leveliing count still reads 0 99 99. I read in a review that the expected life of this SSD is around 270TB of writes, so I`ve still got a bit of time before I have to replace it (barring any faults).

So, I'm getting 250GB of SSD with >500GB/s* read speeds for not an awful lot of money (certainly less than what I would have paid for a 830 256GB).

I believe that the IOPS rating of the 840 (pro and non pro) is better than the 830, and it is IOPS that really make a difference to the user experience.

I`ve installed plenty of 830's and a fair few 840's (non pro). I can't say that I notice any difference in performance between the two. What I do notice is that the price of the 840 is now quite a lot less than the 830 was.

There may have been a short perioed of time when both drives were available, and the 840 may have been slightly more expensive. I currently own an 840 250GB, and I'm very happy with it.
 
I think Im going to be ordering the 128gb pro version, but I was looking at the corsair neutron gtx and I so wanted it but nomatter what review I looked at, the samsung pro came ontop.

Im going for the pro 128gb as I dont really need the space as Im just putting the OS and apps on it and Im currently only using 29gb, so a 250gb would be a overkill. Unless I put my games on it aswel.

I have that choice to make as well 840 pro or the none pro, the extra room and faster write speed of the pro sounds better for my needs but have to wait for an offer to come around again as cheapest i seen was £144 plus cash back.
The non pro might not be good enough for my needs which is unraring large 5gig files.
 
so is the 120gb 840 non pro a good drive and is it as good my crucial m4 60gb for life & reliablity

Should i go 840 none pro or wait for a good price on the pro ?
