Samsung 860 EVO SSD on a very old motherboard

Since the beginning of this year I have been moving all my PC's over from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

Last week, one of the last PC's to be moved over was my wife's which has a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 motherboard with a Phenom 960T and 8GB of DDR2 RAM (Also, AHCI was selected in the BIOS, and the drive was partitioned as BIOS-MBR)

So that I didn't risk any data whilst experimenting with an installation of Windows 10 and getting the appropriate drivers etc, I decided to disconnect the current hard drive and install Windows 10 on a clean Samsung 500GB 860 EVO SSD (the SSD is destined for another PC and was spare at the time).

The result was it took absolutely ages to copy the Windows 10 files across to the SSD, install Windows 10 and once installed, almost every open window displayed "Not Responding". I then tried installing Windows 10 again on two older SSD's (a 250GB Samsung 850 EVO and a 256GB Samsung 850 Pro) and each time it installed relatively quickly at the expected speed.

I then discovered that there was a later firmware available for the 500GB 860 EVO, so I updated it, tried it again, and it was worse.

So to sum up, the newer Samsung 860 EVO does not work well in this old computer. I have no idea why, but I expect it is due to some incompatibility between old and new hardware. If anyone knows why, I would be interested to know more.

This is not actually a problem for me as I do not intend to use this SSD in this old computer. It is destined for another PC (I have just tested this SSD on another PC UEFI-GPT and it runs perfectly at max speed). However, just in case this information is useful to anyone else having problems, I decided to post it here.

Have you tried that drive in other PC?
Would try running tests on it before taking it into use to see if there might be some problem in it.

I forgot to add in the above post that I had also tested it (on my other PC - x470, 3600X and RTX 2060) using Samsung Magician and it passed as faultless.
I have since installed Windows 10, DCS World and Oculus software on it and it is lightning fast.

I do not have any concerns with this drive, nor with the old computer.
However, if you can advise of any other SSD testing software, I could give that ago to be 110% sure that it is ok.
