Samsung 9100 Pro

I can't see this extra bandwidth benefits desktop users in any meaningful way.

You'll never have anything internet source that can saturate it's write speeds. Large local transfers will be bottlenecked by the other media you're copying from/too, maybe marginally faster loading times is all you'll get.

Keen to hear how you got on with this: most of the reviews are positive, but not overwhelming
So far so good. I swapped out the 990 Pro. Immediately noticed the much faster boot time. Then proceeded to install games. Huge game files were downloaded and then installed in seconds. I should get a chance to actually run some games tomorrow.

Its mild now. Actual gains for gamers from a SATA III SSD to a NVME Gen 5 SSD are tiny
Not so sure about that.

Installed the 9100 (Gen 5) which arrived this afternoon: loading into games is smoother and quicker than my trusty 990pro (Gen 4)

Uh huh

If you feels it worth it to save a couple percent of time then go for it

You can save even more time by switching to a 2nd hand optane drive

I have seen some reviews, some of which are ambivalent about Gen 5 SSD and its uses outside of productivity tasks (involving large file transfers). I am also very happy to be convinced I am barking up the wrong tree.

What I do know is that switching to SSDs in the 2010s significantly quickened loading of Windows and entry into games; compared to HDD. Again, when I last updated to a Samsung 990 Pro I noticed an incremental (admittedly, not as sizeable leap compared to the HDD switch) improvement in speeds. So, it follows, that given the Gen 5 SSD (9100 pro) is double the speed of my older Gen 4 (990 Pro), I should once again experience faster and more responsive Windows and quicker loading of games; which justify my purchase this week!
