I saw that when I was downloading the Samsung magician, I wasn’t sure if it’s the one for my drive or if it could damage the drive due to it not being correctly updated using that so haven’t done it yet.You could try downloading/using the FW ISO..

Ok thanksI've not used it myself so can't comment on how safe it is, maybe someone else can comment, but i would assume it's similar to updating FW on other devices in that it won't let you update if there's a device/version mismatch.
I'll be honest, I haven't been brave enough to try to update my 970 EVO Plus yet. But I did read that there is another revision of these drives (for once an improvement, despite the increase in temperature), so perhaps this is why the update failed for you - I suspect it will probably fail for me too, as I've had my drive for a while. So i tried the ISO route last night and after much faffing about because the spin of Linux used on the ISO didn't recognise my keyboard (using a USB 2 port fixed that) i tried to update my 970 EVO Plus as the FW on the drive is 2B2QEXM7 and on Samsung's site it says the latest is 4B2QEXM7.
The short of that is it wouldn't let me, i can't remember the exact reason it gave, but having researched a bit further this morning that may well be down to a change in the controller so i guess when the Magician software was reporting correctly that there was no FW update.
WRT to the OP's 990 and Magician reporting that there's no FW update despite one being released in February, 0B2QJXD7 on the drive 1B2QJXD7 being listed on the Samsung site, could it be that they've made changes to the controller so Magician is reporting that there isn't an update because there isn't one for the new controller, because the one listed on their site if for 990's with the old controller.
Just return the drive as not working if things go pear shaped - which I doubt they will.Hmm so I might give this a try if it simply doesn’t let me update and doesn’t brick or in someway damages the drive, it’s a new build so not got anything to backup but would lose £175 if the rainforest/Samsung doesn’t rma a drive damaged due to this fw update.
I'm guessing it maybe referring to old AMD chipsets as I'm not sure AM4/5 even have options for IDE mode any more, either way I'll give it a go when i get a spare half hour. The firmware update may not be supported in AHCI mode with some AMD chipsets. If this is the case, please change AHCI mode to IDE mode in the BIOS, and then update the firmware. After completion of the firmware update process, you can reconfigure AHCI mode in the BIOS.
I don't even know if M.2 drives can be changed from AHCI to IDE. My Asus ROG Strix H270F Gaming motherboard is Intel based, but I'll have a look. That's the one, that's the message i got and couldn't remember.
I was just reading the Samsung guide on their manual firmware ISO's and it says...

No idea why but it would appear so, fortunately it was a quick and simple process. So it's not, at least in your case, a situation of Magician detecting a different controller or something. It was literally Magician not detecting that there was updated FW.
Interesting and thanks for the update.
Us lesser people with EVO drives just have to accept what we're given. So it's not, at least in your case, a situation of Magician detecting a different controller or something. It was literally Magician not detecting that there was updated FW.
Interesting and thanks for the update.
