Samsung Cf791 or Acer Predator x34a?

I have been really close to buying the Samsung CF791 lately after convincing myself that I dont need Gsync but today I can buy a Predator x34a for £800 which is actually a saving on the samsung. So now im at a crossroads, do I sacrifice the inky blacks and steeper immersive curve of the samsung to gain Gsync and IPS?
What would you do?

Do you value better IQ (deeper blacks etc) more than gaming fluidity (if you have a fairly powerful nVidia card of course). That's your choice...
I'm not entirely sure hahaha

Honestly I want my cake and to eat it but I know currently the perfect monitor isn't out there.
I will say I run an nvidia card and could benefit from gsync but I'm worried about being offended by IPS glow

Don't forget the Acer Predator Z35P is out within days, VA + 3440 + 120Hz with an overclock ;) It has the potential to be pretty damn epic!

Might be the best the best option for a lot of us when it's released

I went with the CF791 (and running 1080ti), never had Gsync so not entirely sure if I care for tearing, never really noticed it before (so I guess not sensitive). Wanted a better contrast as I do care about blacks. Have to say even the CF791 contrasts isn't what I really want (but I imagine I would find the IPS more disapointing). Up to you, not entirely sure where you could preview em.

All I will say is don't be "offended" by people who go on about IPS glow, generally there are 2 types of people who "exaggerate" the "problem":

- those who don't own or let alone have ever laid eyes on an IPS screen in the first place, they either go by over exposed photos on forums like this or just use it an excuse to justify their non-IPS purchases
- people using a silly brightness setting i.e. 150+ luminance on a lot of dark content in a dark room (if this is your sort of usage, then VA is without a doubt the best here but even that sucks compared to a half decent TV nowadays...)

I'm sceptical whether the acer "p" will ever arrive on these shores! That said, it does look amazing. It's such a difficult choice!

As for the Samsung, I too have never had gsync and never game with vsync either. Never noticed tearing before so again a confusing issue.

I had thought that, I generally like to make up my own mind with things but I have no way to test without actually buying one and getting one here.
At this point I'm leaning towards the acer and it's down the simple reason of cost, it actually is the cheaper option. Not too long ago I've seen it being sold for over a grand.

What geforce card you running?

I think one of the reasons I have never noticed it is because on the CF791 my FPS never drop below 100, and on my previous monitor it was only 1080p and with what I play again frame rates on my old 7950 never dropped below 70 (that card was a trooper, bought it from OCUK in 2011 lasted until now, when it turned into a noise machine).

As for the Acer p, do not think it get the quantom dots which the Samsung gets, so a more limited colour palit for 20 fps. Also if it uses the same panel as the HP omen believe the viewing angles slightly inferior.

The AG352UCG sounds ideal for you op :) cheaper than both of them too.

I have looked at the AOC previously, does that one suffer from black smearing? I have heard mixed reviews but I have heard mixed reviews of all of them to be fair!

Im using a GTX1080 so the FPS should be relatively stable without gsync I'd imagine.

I think the smearing is just inherant in VA panels to be honest mate. Whether you would notice it is another matter though, there are compromises on all of the current monitor techs be it ips glow/black crush etc.

I know man, at the price points we are talking it is hard to accept a compromise! I'm going to sleep on it a while and see what my gut says in the morning and just go with that. I'm certain whichever I choose will give me the instant wow factor regardless!

OCUK must be teasing me... they just dropped the price on the Samsung! I do like the sound of the 1500r curve too. arggghhh its such a tough decision!

I've owned both the Samsung and acer currently have the Asus pg348q.

I can tell you initial impressions were good for the cf791 I wanted to like it but in the end I returned it.

Reason : no gsync + the cf791 seriously smears dark colours if your sensitive to this kind of thing it will bug you hence why I returned.

I haven't seen a smearing panel for 7 years the last panel I saw do this was the Sony x4500 and I returned that the next day , not something i expected to still be present on panels today.

The Acer though has serious Blb issues more so than Asus ± wonky bevels from poor build.

To be honest both screens have there issues, I find it's just a case of picking which defects you can live with.

This is a thread in overclock.net that me and another user posted pics video comparison and good / bad points. The panels compared are the Samsung and Asus but as the Asus uses the same panel as the Acer comparison is valid

Hope that helps :)

I found that with the Acer; putting slight pressure (especially in the top left corner) you could massively reduce the "IPS Glow / BLB". You could feel the bevel was squidgy. I had to return mine as it's just not something I'm willing to live with.

For me it was a little foreign, I've got a 24 inch dell ultrasharp U2410 and hand on heart there's no IPS Glow, no BLB unless you took it into a cave and switched it on. I don't understand why 7 years later there's Victorian lamps shining in the corners of a 1k monitor.

Thanks for sharing that thread, I like to read every post when I am about to drop a big wedge on anything so reading through the arguments of the human perceived hearing levels of X frequencies got a bit hard towards the end haha.

I just cant help leaning towards the Samsung.. I think the planets have aligned and my mind is stubbornly made up despite several people now trying to steer me towards the ASUS/ACER or even the AOC!

I would agree with you (although no experience of gsync). The reason I debate my decision from time to time is I have found IPS screens are way nicer on the eyes (especially the beautiful one on my old Sony Duo 13), this one I find can hurt a little after a long time. But being old now I see that as a sign to get of the damn thing, the days of playing 14 hours straight are gone :(

Its basically either gsync and IPS or aggressive curve and deep blacks. I have no prior experience of gsync either and generally play with sync off altogether. At 36 years old my eyes do feel the strain after a while too, but im also old enough to see past sales gimmics, however true they actually are!
