Hey guys and girls,

My Samsung hard drive died on me over night, came to switch on in the morning and it doesn't spin up or show in bios. tested in another computer and same thing so i check warranty and it has 4 months left, great!

I got my RMA number and just to check i phoned them to make sure i would get my broken hard drive back along with a replacement to which they said i don't! First of all this has my sensitive data on so i don't want it ending up in the wrong hands even if it is dead and i also wanted to get it sent off to see about getting the data recovered...

The guy told me about sending it off to the company's listed on their website as it wouldn't void my warranty and could then send off for a replacement after. Heres the website with companys on

Notice how they are all from the USA? bugger!

Has any one got any solutions ?

EDIT: after clicking one of the USA looking links and reading through i find a little UK button! problem solved!

Well i got told £350-£450 no matter on the amount of data they could recover, i asked if it would cost less just for a couple of the files which is wouldn't! From what i told them they said its the PCB which seems to have gone which makes sense, working 100% fine 1 minute, next boot nothing ..

Going to see how tricky replacing a PCB would be and if i can find one cheap on eBay or the like!

Bit of an update,

For people who don't know you can do a bit of DIY on dead drives by trying to replace the controller board. The problem is that the manafactuers change these and put new revisions and firmware on them, you need an exact match to be able to swap them over which is hard when the drives are nearly 3 years old!

You can imagine my excitement when i found the same model hard drive second hand on eBay which was only 1 month older than mine!! i asked for all the details on the hard drive like the Revision number written on the board (Rev04) which was the same so i started to bid, because there was no buyout price.

There were 4 other people bidding and i couldn't risk loosing so i signed up to a sniping website and put a high bid in and bingo i won!

I picked up the drive this morning, tested it worked and then proceeded to swap the boards over.. plug it in... turn on power... look at bios boot screen.... OMFG YES! (better than sex feeling) it was detected and when in windows fully working and for the last hour have been grabbing things of it and backing up :)

650gb of data retrieved for £31. bargain compared to the £400+ i was being quoted! Best of all the drive i brought has a bad sector so will be sending them both off for warranty replacement and getting some nice shiny new ones back :D

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but i wondered, what were the symtoms of your drive failure. I have one here at the moment pulled from a laptop.

You can hear it power, and spin up (or try to) about 3 or 4 times. In the bios it is not found, but is not labelled as "not installed" just a blank entry.

Also when i plug the drive in under windows, theres no drive, but in device manager it show as a generic external USB device (slotted into a caddy)

just wondering if it's worth trying the same, as the drive contains all the accounts and photos for a friends business
