I bought a 750GB F1 yesterday, and started to install vista on my pc. it let me partition the drive, but when i formatted it, the drive then disappeared completely. So I stuck my existing os drive back in and it found the new hd in drive manager, but every time i formatted it, it took ages (with quick format) and then disappeared. I've just stuck it in my son's pc, with a 680i motherboard, and it seems to be working. I'm doing a full format now to see if this helps, but I'm at a loss as to what's going on. I have the latest bios on my p5k premium, and I tried it on all the different sata ports, with different cables etc.

Please help!!!!!!!

I presume from the lack of reply that the full format worked then?

I am scared now because I'm putting my P5K premium back in and buying a 750 F1 tomorrow!

Let me know how it goes.

No it didn't work!!!!! I did the full format, and then plugged it back into my system. All seemed fine, drives were there (2 partitions). Then I tried to copy a file across to test it. I copied the 3dmark 06 file (580MB) and it went really fast until it had 5 secs to go. It then stuck, and hung my system. I left it for ages thinking it would sort itself out, but it didn't. It's going back from whence it came, and I'm getting a seagate 7200.11 instead :(

I have one of these working perfectly and very quickly on a P5K Deluxe. Must be a setup issue (check your bios for the boot order).

Have you marked the HD in disk management as active?

Did you allocate a drive letter to the drive?

Had to do a full format first (takes 2.5-3 hours) as apparently Samsung have a tech on this HD which means until the full format completes the drive is pretty useless as it tests the sectors after the format to determine the fastest write speeds and HD surface condition and drops down speeds if it is not properly formatted.

Hmmm, does seem strange. Shouldn't Samsung make it clear that the drive needs a full format before operation?

Anyway, if this is the case, can I do a full format via the Vista installer?

AWPC, I've checked bios setup, boot order, changed ports/cables, done a full format on a 680i based pc, assigned drive letters, partitions are active etc etc. Still no joy. This is goiong back in exchange (plus a bit extra) for a Seagate!!

Sounds like you know what you're doing so it must be a bad drive or compatability problem. I've just installed a F1 750 in to my system and managed to partition it and ghost a windows xp install from an old PATA drive to it... Worked without fault first time.

Anyway best of luck with the new drive, I'm sure it will be fine. Unfortunately with PCs on very rare occasions things that should work together well simply refuse to.

This is very interesting, any links/proof/source?

I've got one of these running perfectly on my P5K-Premium, no problems at all.
Full format, then copied data across.

Yep, it should work perfectly, i guess it's just one of those times when you expect to do something so simple, and it turns out to be a complete mare!! I had less hassle changing from a 680i and e6600 to a p5k premium and q6600, including getting it oced to 3.6!

Bito, on onother topic, I can see you have the infiniti 720W psu. I'm in the market for a new psu, and this is on the short list. Would you recommend it?

Hi ya.....the Enermax Infiniti is a decent PSU.....Nice stable rails and is quiet.
Replaced a Seasonic S12 600W, only for the convenience of the modular cables :)

Update - I took the F1 back, and paid the extra for a Seagate 750GB 7200.11, which works perfectly, and quietly :). Likelihood is that the F1 was faulty, but I didn't fancy chancing another one. It only takes one bad experience to put you off :(
