Hi all,

Amazing looking forum. First time poster here.
I'm pretty old school with how I use tech/phones.
I'm due an upgrade with my Samsung, and I have noticed
most phone these days do not come with a 3.5mm jack for headphones.
I'm sure many people are aware, but it came as a surprise for me!

For my upgrade, I've only been looking at Samsung's that have a 3.5mm jack,
and of course, there are hardly any!

I've now realised you can get an adaptor for a phone without a 3.5mm jack.

My question, if anyone knows, is if I get the adaptor, do you think I'd notice any
deterioration in the sound in my headphones, because I am using an adaptor?
My main concern is volume. I don't want to lose volume maximum capabilities.
Obviously, I don't want to go to the trouble with an accessory for my phone, if
it in anyway, does not give me a "like for like" quality as if there was not an
adaptor, and I was plugging my headphones directly into an in-built 3.5mm jack.

This is such an adaptor here I believe
https://tinyurl.com/4pc5fzav (Amazon UK link).

I'm sure I'll convert to wireless headphones one day, but I don't want to lose
the options of old school way of plugging in my headphones.

Any assistance, really appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

I've just had to buy a USB C to jack adapter for my Samsung because my car doesn't have Bluetooth. Works exactly the same as before, though annoyingly I didn't get one that charges at the same time.

Hi,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (not that matters too much) and I use a Fiio KA3 Amp/Dac (about the size of a pack of chewing gum) for headphone out from USB into FiiO FH7 Hybrid In-Ear Monitors. I am very pleased with the sound quality, it can be very loud if you go full beans on the volume, my old ears usual go to around 24/100. Other similar options are out there, from very cheap upwards. I use it with the free HiBy music app, bit perfect, so I have read but also sounds good via my Tidal app.

Thanks both! You are really helping me out, because I am going to order my phone tonight and the adaptor and will look on that link above as well, thank you. ;)

I had a S10+ which was one of the last great Samsung phones to have a 3.5 headphone slot, I had to upgrade eventually so got an a S22 Ultra on release this year and frequently still use wired earbuds with it as free wireless ones with it are often not as convenient in terms of charging, running out of charge, etc, so also I also purchased a similar adaptor to the Samsung you've linked.

The one I got is the Maxonar Amazon choice and costs about the same as the official Samsung one on Amazon, has plenty of good reviews, and does work well and sound good, but isn't as secure as the traditional 3.5 slot if you're jogging or moving a lot. When jogging I've had media stop playing just from very minor movement of the USC C connecter which is reproduceable just by slightly rocking the USB C cable laterally as can happen frequently when jogging.

I've had to place it more carefully so the USC C doesn't move to get around it which isn't ideal.

I'll be interested to hear if that official Samsung is free of that issue, it is likely to fit more flush than the Maxanor one does, though even official Samsung USB data cables allow a lot more lateral movement than the 3.5's jacks do.

If you really want to be future proof made sure the adapter includes a DAC, some phones don't have audio wired up to the USB port so passive adapters won't work. I think the Samsung one you linked does have one built in so it should be fine.

Currently using one from ugreen, it's cheap but I have not had any issues with it yet, and it's been used on a OnePlus, Sony and Pixel phone, as well as a Samsung tablet, and even a Nintendo Switch (I left the adapter connected to the headphones).

Thanks again all, and great point about going jogging/running. I do rely on my phone and headphones for that, so thanks for the heads up on that potential issue. And thanks for informing about DAC.

If you have a spare phone, could you use that as an MP3 player? My granny gave me her old Galaxy A5 which has 3.5mm and I sometimes play MP3s off it when using an old headset. For Spotify, tether it from your main phone.

Most of the time though, I use a bluetooth headset which also has a 3.5mm out, so there is the option of using either.
