I'm still stuck on the S1 for another 6 months or so and I decided recently to update the firmware. That was about a month ago. Since then I've had nothing but problems, problems which didnt occur pre update. Wireless networks, both local and mobile data networks both constantly disconnect and need to be reconnected manually each time. This takes a while and is very irritating.
On top of that my keyboard app / prog keeps dying. It will get slower and slower at recognising typed keys until eventually it comes up with an error and gets restarted. Most of the time after restart it will work again but you cant see what you're typing!

So as I currently have the latest official firmware I was curious if theres something more stable out there, like custom firmware or something. I'm personally not familiar with mobile phone tech at all, but savy enough on pc tech!

I'd go for a custom ROM then. The XDA forum for the SGS1 has great guides and if you can access download mode using the 3 button hold then you essentially can not break it no matter what you do (ISH - you'd have to go out of your way to make it un-flashable put it that way).

Go on XDA, download the latest Devil Kernel and SLIM Ics rom.

Copy them over to the phone, go into CWM and flash the kernel, then the rom.

Voilà! A nice and fast phone.
