Samsung is building a GPU

I would love it if Samsung entered the enfusiast Descrete GPU market but i doubt that is going to happen.

Potentially great news.

If they put lots of resources into it, they have their own foundry, everything could be made in house AND get priority.

Could really light a fire under AMD and Nvidia.
 
Agree that it will mostly be low powered Mobile type GPU's at first but see no reason if they get a good efficient design that they wouldn't think about going big with it as there is lots of money to be made with Supercomputing.

And from there its not a giant leap to enter the Desktop market.
 
more players in the gpu market can only be a good thing.
but as above, it will more than likely be for mobile phones.
It would be awesome though

Agreed and i would think it will be for mobile type tech at first , but its not a huge leap from there to desktop, The foundry is a huge plus , I think we would all be happy with a third player in the game if there competitive

Another player in the GPU deparment will be great for us guys.
 
that would be cool, but i think this is for some other product like their VR headset, phones etc, doubt they will make it to desktop
 
It's always funny when people say it would be great to see a third player in the GPU market, but nobody ever puts their money where there mouth is.

When SiS tried to get back in with their last Xabre cards, nobody touched them because they were slower than the competing ATi/Nvidia cards and SiS gave up. When Matrox tried with their last Parhelia it started okay but after ATi released the faster 9700 Pro at the same price nobody wanted a Parhelia and the failure made Matrox cancel any successor. This pattern would be repeated again in 2003 when XGI attempted to enter the fray with the Volari Duo.

yes, but you can't except that from a company that makes over 30 billions a year, samsung can aquire brains for it, they have their own foundries, and extremely deep pockets, if they wanted to make a gpu they will probably step up the game even for the competition.
but i still dont see them coming to desktop, the market isn't as big as mobile, dont know if it's worth it, especialy with major competition already in place.
personaly i see samsung launching a new console :D , with their VR headset, they seem interested in gaming more and more, who knows :p

Their onboard GPUs have a full feature set, but I don't think Intel sees a future for dedicated graphics. They are slowly eating upwards through the low-mid GPU market with their onboard designs.
 
Even if they did desktop graphics, the driver optimizations might take years :(

I'd welcome a third player though, keeps the prices more in check.
 
I would think it would be for mobiles as well but would be pretty cool to see a third player enter the arena.... I bet it would use Elpida memory :D
 
i threw it there for fun, but when i think about it, it's really a good idea.
new Samsung Console, they would be good at it, and with a perfect timing, end 2015 early 2016, you get 20 or 16nm gpu, 14nm cpu, perf wise it would blow away the current gen with low end 2012 gpus.
korea has a gaming culture, a lot of studios that would love to make exclusives.

The problem is that most Asia games won't get localised, and those that do usually won't get realised till like one more more years after the launch of whichever country they originated from (usually due to licensing issues etc).

Had half the Japanese Playstation title made it to the west and localised and released at the same time as Japan or as little as 1-3 month later, Xbox won't stand a chance period, not even their Halo will save it.
