A friend has one of the above which has suddenly stopped working. When connected to a Mac/PC, there is a blue light (assuming power) and a beep. It's been like this for about 4 days. It has not been dropped.

We've done the following:

  • New Cable
  • Firmly wiggled the USB on each end - Drive & Laptop
  • Rescan Device Manager

The contents need to be recovered and my last ditch attempt will be to dismantle the drive and use a docking station.

Before we do this, any suggestions would be great :)

if its not being seen at all by the PC then there is not much else you can do. it maybe the enclosure that's causing the issue.

have a look online and see if there is any guides on removing the HDD from it to make sure you can then use it as a internal drive.

That was my first thought, the enclosure. I'm actually going to be in Manchester week commencing 20th so I can have a proper look at the device. It would seem however, this is a common issue with these Seagate drives as this is reported across a number of forums.

The most common fix appears to be a new cable or to firmly/violently wiggle the USB on the enclosure. Seeing as the device is less than 4 months old, I'm not keen on dismantling it and she's been quoted £500 for recovering the data.

Assuming I can get the data off, I'll tell her to take it back for a refund and give her a better choice of drive to get instead.
