Samsung Odyssey G75 HDR drop outs, constant firmware updates and Samsungs refusal to take the monitor back for repair or replacement during warranty

Hi all,

Firstly has anyone else been having the same issues as me with their Samsung odyssey monitors? mine is the 27" G75 1440p version

While running HDR content in gaming or streaming mine will intermittently turn the screen off and back on as if the cable had been unplugged and plugged in again. I've tried it in various settings including the preferred 240hz adaptive sync. This happens every few hours but when it does it it can do this 4 or 5 times before seeming to go back to normal.

I also have been getting backlight flickering and randomly dropping back to sdr and staying there at which point i can only get it back into HDR by alt tabbing back to the desktop.

I have been back to Samsung customer service in excess of 8 occasions which results in me being given a new firmware version then being asked to factory reset it, unplug everything and tell them if it has fixed it. As the problem is intermittent it's impossible to say if it has fixed it during the call or webchat. I take a note of the reference number they give me and each time they tell me my reference number does not exist and take me back through the same nonsense only for it to be the same issues.

The closest i got to getting the monitor sent for repair was when they asked for a copy of my invoice and then ended the webchat the second i sent it (less than 30 seconds after being asked for the invoice. and once again had to start from scratch.

I've since tried going through the retailer to try and get the monitor fixed and they have had it rejected by Samsung as they said it breaches GDPR rules for it to be sent that way. I have seen a copy of the rejection e-mails and quite frankly I'm appalled by Samsungs customer service. The retailer has since ordered me a replacement unit and has vowed to continue chasing Samsung to try and get this resolved.

Are they all like this? Is Samsung trying to dodge a bigger issue?

It's running on a 3090 FE thats rock solid stable and kept plenty cool along with having tried 4 different display port cables including the supplied one. I also tried it on my partners computer with an R390 and had the same issues.

Thanks!

Sounds very similar to my warranty claim experience with Scamsung and is exactly why I will never buy another one of their products. They make some nice stuff, but once they have your money they are beaten only by NPower in how unpleasant they are to deal with. Horrible company.

I had exactly the same issues with mine the display was great but quality was terrible, two repairs and still issues, it's not the device as others have had issues, managed to get a refund and unlikely to buy Samsung again, I used the money to get a LG c2 42 oled

What do you mean?
Sorry meant not likely just one users device, there's lots of posts and info of people having issues with the samsung odysey monitors, flickering, scanlines on the whole screen on certain sites, I tried different firmware files from various regions, different cables dp/hdmi and computers. Had it sent for repair twice and they replaced the screen but it never resolved the issues so I got lucky and managed to return it to the rainforest site for a full refund. It's a shame as when it was working the image was really great

Yeah I'm not holding out much hope that the new screen will be any better.
Really rather annoyed about it though I'm glad I didn't go for the G95 now as it seems they are also doing it.

I tried their forums and every single thread that i could find relating to the same faults was closed with it saying there was a post with the accepted fix but no fixes were actually there.
I genuinely think Samsung is trying to pull a fast one with a product they know is defective. Am i right in thinking the entire odyssey series was pulled for the best part of a year due to quality issues?

It's taken me over 6 months to get this far and I'm currently having to use my computer with my old Benq XL2411T 1080p 144hz screen which only has DVI-D or HDMI ports so I'm stuck at 60hz 1080p with a 3090 which is seriously frustrating.

I'd be interested to know if Overclockers are having or have had similar issues with this fault and Samsungs refusal to even offer a repair?

Thanks!

Yeah it seems like some of these products have a high percentage of issues, even the AW widescreen that recently came out seemed to have plenty of quality problems considering they are a premium product, why risk the customers returning them?

I did do my research and seen the firmware updates being pushed as a 'fix' so hoping for the best although I did read many a happy punter but would be interested in the real figures when it comes to panel problems - as you say covering it up is only delaying the inevitable, sad to hear it.

So the replacement screen is doing the same thing right out of the box. Going to speak to the retailer and try to get a refund. No confidence in the product at all. Absolutely ridiculous at this kind of price point imo.

As a bonus I finally managed to record one of the drop outs. Though not a great camera angle. Using my phone and I knocked it mid-game.

So what causes that? I see that behaviour when the software toggles on HDR for example, what are these people in support telling you?

That would be annoying but should be preventable.

I also have a 3090FE, using it about a month.

Support aren't telling me anything. Just power cycle the monitor, do a factory reset and here's another firmware update for you to try and unless you can demonstrate the fault during the call / chat they close the case and I'm back to square one again.

Mine has had the issue with flickering with certain grey patterns, where the screen looks interlaced. It's not reared it's ugly head in games outside of a small area in Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition so I'm happy to live with it. If it had any other issues such as the HDR one OP has encountered I'd try and return it.

While it's a great monitor in most respects the QC issues are extremely disappointing for what is a premium product, and put me off considering any other Odyssey models until they've been in the hands of consumers for long enough for faults like this to be well known.

I seen some other high end brands have QC issues aswell. Whilst we cannot expect every unit to be perfect, as mentioned when your paying that high end tier you expect less problems and when you do there is a decent returns care process.

Hoping I can go some time before any issues present themselves or even better have none, I think the sleep state can confuse the monitor, but I also think windows 10 doesn't do a great job of HDR either.

Agreed, Windows 10 does not allow a streamlined HDR experience at all. Also the trouble with the Odyssey is that it's such a common fault, affecting a seemingly high percentage of panels.

Yes am keen to know more about this so if I spot it I can act swiftly. Would be great if the community condensed a few tests in a list so when people unbox a return or buy new they run through the list and see obvious common flaws.

The easiest test is probably looking at the middle of the bottom bezel, if the text there reads "Samsung" then you've probably got one of the dodgy ones
