Samsung Omnia 7 (WinPho7) - 1 week on......

HTC said you can break the antenna removing the back of the HD7 to apply an SD Card.

Whether that is a load of rubbish remains to be seen but I'd certainly wait a while to find out :p

Update: HTC tells us that this particular surgery's a risky one, not only for your warranty but the connectivity of your phone. Here's what you're getting yourself into, according to a senior company rep:

While this is not technically impossible, one thing that is important to know is that the process of removing the cover to access these components is actually very tricky – and in many cases, will result in the antenna section being irreparably detached from the circuit board (rendering the phone unusable). Additionally, to actually replace the card, a few reasonably important parts have to be forcibly removed. So, just a good warning to anyone thinking of attempting this maneuver is that the possibility of bricking is extremely high, and will, of course, void the product warranty.

Why do most of the online stores not have the Omnia for sale, rather annoying tbh. :(

Still haven't been able to see one in the flesh yet either but what is the best deal for these at the moment? 18 month contract max (no 24 months).

Yeah, the Omnia does seem a bit of a pain to get hold of at the moment. Orange have stock and T-Mobile are getting it very soon. Three also have stock.

The above are all £35 24 month contracts to get the phone free, which is rather steep but still well below iPhone 4 territory.

Mobiles.co.uk have it as 'coming soon'.

Buymobilephones have it available on some very, very nice deals, but stock isn't confirmed and it will be the 2nd/3rd week of November.

They do have some very nice deals though, by far and away the cheapest - http://www.buymobilephones.net/mobile-phones/Samsung/Samsung-i8700-Omnia-7/30,55441

This deal would be ideal for you Amp, £5 less than the main network 24 month contracts and has plenty of minutes and texts, I think the data will be 1 or 3GB.

If they had stock I'd have ordered one now without question, but I'm hoping to go into town on Monday to try one against a HD7 as they are available a bit cheaper and not via the main networks.

I have an omnia 7 which I have just bought from 3
and I love it. However I am having major problems
transferring my mobile number across from t-mobile
to 3, I got the pac code from t-mobile and was told by
3 that the transfer would happen yesterday.
I can now make calls from my omnia 7 and the correct
number is displayed however I cannot receive any calls
made from a landline (get engaged tone) and cannot
receive any calls from a different mobile network (get dead
line tone) in fact the only calls the phone can receive are
from 3's support line. The icon is displayed on the phone
indicating that call divert is being used when it has not
been activated on the handset.
I have spoken to three about this at length and their engineers
are looking into it, I use this phone for my buisness and cannot
afford to lose calls..

The biggest compliment I can give my Omnia 7 is that it just works. The software is limited (no custom ringtones/alarms). It is well ahead of where Android was on release, and for my uses it is better than Android now. I would like to see:
•Better marketplace searching - you can't search by type so if you are just looking for apps you get song titles cluttering things up.

•Custom ringtones and alarms - seems a pretty basic thing to me.

• Flash.

•Ability to get photos off of the device more easily.

Flash is confirmed for the early 2011 WP7 update, along with Silverlight in the browser and some other things.

Custom ringtones/alarms will be sorted out probably even faster than that, either by way of applications or another update.

I'm all for Android customisation, but at the end of the day, I'd like something very functional, that looks nice (I think WP7 looks absolutely superb visually, and I didn't like it at all at first), has decent integration with my PC (Windows 7!) and that has a great browser.

In all honesty, I bet most people dont really get much in the way of benefit from all the fancy custom stuff you have on Android, and just as many people dont even care about it.

Thanks Robb, sure there weren't that many deals on the Omnia last week. That one you pointed out is a pretty sweet deal, only thing is don't T-Mobile gimp the data on 3rd party bought contracts?

I can't see it taking long for MS to reorganise the marketplace slightly and allow you to search by type, ringtones should hopefully be available shortly (better be). The only things putting me off WinPho 7 (coming from WinMo) and pushing me towards Android is the tethering and ability to use the phone as a mass storage device. Also the ability to change the look of the software is nice to have once in a while. I don't do it often on my HD but it's nice to be able to download another rom after 6 months and have essentially a brand new phone to play with. How long will it take before WinPho looks boring?

Well, the iPhone seems to do extremely well and that looks pretty 'boring' most of the time :p

While I enjoy changing the layouts of things on Android, I never really find it benefits me at all other than giving me something to fiddle with when I should be doing something else anyway!

Well yeah, doesn't mean I didn't get bored of the look of the OS within 6 months, and that was just being shown it by others. :p

TBH I've flashed my HD a grand total of 3 times in 2 years. Twice in the first couple of months which gave a nice speed boost and made it nicer to use (Duttys roms) and then about 3 months ago because I was bored of the look.

Well, its pretty much impossible to recommend an iPhone or WP7 to you as you seem to want the ability to change how the entire phone looks a lot of the time, if so, Android is for you.

Switching looks in WP7 is surprisingly effective... My dad swapped to a black bg/red tiles theme and compared to the default o2 setting it looked like a new phone :D + You can add different types of icons.. err.. tiles, not just app shortcuts but contacts etc. So there are options to keep things fresh.

Although it's a pita having no homescreen widgets/buttons. Changing the screens brightness, turning off 3G, bluetooth etc is tiresome compared to a swipe/press.

Not really, just if I have the hoice I can play around with the look every so often.

TBH unless when I have a play with it it's terrible I'll almost certainly get one, the Desire HD and all it's jutting out plastic bits (the back plastic bits) just doesn't do it for me (and TBH Android never really did it for me looks wise).

Well, I think its a solid choice Amp. As someone said in another thread, Microsoft will ensure it is a successful venture for them, just like they kept pouring money into Xbox.

I really cant wait to get mine, I think the Zune software is WAY nicer than the iPod software, and it just works in a fairly new and unique way.

Its always fun to be 'in there' with a new platform being developed too :D

Poor review? It got 4 stars :p

I've got my Desire HD here now and the screen isn't as much of a deal breaker as you'd think (its very good), so if you like the HD7 then its not a bad option.

The Omnia 7 has a slightly better camera than the HD7 though, other than the screen they are just about the same.

This is one great phone texting on it is as good as the iPhone 4 very rare I make mistakes, won't miss the endless trying different roms like I used to on android just to get a fast smooth phone as this is the smoothest I have used so far and it can only get better in time.

Well it was the poor build quality and a couple of other things they mentioned that made me go "um...". However the fact half their review was copied and pasted from all the other WP7 reviews they did (inc battery stats) made me thnk they may be being a bit dodgy with it.

Just checked GSM review and another one and they agree with engadget so I'll take techradar as being a weak link. :p

Either way I'm just going to ring up O2 and get my pac number... I really can't see them agreeing to drop £5-10 a month and £100 for the phone to keep me on so the HD7 is unlikely.

Poor build quality is certainly not an issue, this is easily one of the best built phones I've had, its rock solid. On par with the iPhone 4 just a bit lighter.

That's what I assumed from people on here and engadget so I was taking techradar with a pinch of salt.

Well O2 managed to knock £5 off the 18 month contracts shown on their website and that was it (still cost for the phone and less minutes) so I'm now just waiting for my PAC code to come through and I'll get the Omnia 7 from BMP as long as I pass the credit check (which I usually do...).

I assume they will force the handset to be sent to the cardholders address though not my uni address which means another couple of days before I get it. :(
