Samsung or Seagate?

If you're after outright performance, the F1 series from Samsung is way ahead of the competition, the new platters are a technological marvel. What are you looking for and what are your priorities?

i saw the tomshardware guide that showed the 1TB drive was fast... but they didnt test 750GB or 500GB samsung f1 drives. Are the 750 and 500's as fast as the 1tb

I don't know unfortunately - If they are using the 333Gb platters in the 750Gb then it will be (rumour was that it would be 3 Platters with some of it disabled <- wouldn't it be nice if we could unlock the spare?) Will have to see if I can find a review - didn't thing there was a 500Gb F1?

My understanding is that the 750Gb one will be short stroked and hence the fastest (on average) of the bunch. There will be drives in sizes right down to 160Gb.

Thanks ever so much for the replies guys. Seems everyone has their favourites with regards to the hard drives so i guess i should just choose whichever i like the look of best. With regards to what i'm gonna be using it for, well its going in the rig in my sig which is used mainly for gaming, using photoshop and adobe premiere.

Also, is it literally just a case of sticking the sata drive in and switching the pc on and using the xp disc to format/install windows? or is there something else i need to do to move from ide to sata.

Yep, that's pretty much it - make sure you disconnect any other harddrives while you do it though to save any hassle - nothing worse than windows deciding to call your boot drive e:\ :rolleyes:

If you are planning to raid your new drive(s)? then you'll also need the raid drivers than came with the mobo - should be on a floppy somewhere, if not remember to download them from the net first!

Nope, didn't come with a floppy disk, don't have a floppy drive either. I'll only have one of these drives at the minute anyway so its not so much of an issue.
