Samsung plasma code explaination?

Wondering if anyone here can give me some help.

Another thread about what TV to buy, sorry. But ive got it down to one model but am unsure if the ‘code’ is right. I always spent hours/days researching anything I want to buy, but I am beat on this one.

I am looking at the Samsung PS42Q97HDX Plasma TV, it’s an upgrade to my old Samsung rear projection. Main reason for the upgrade is the fact ive just bought a PS3 and it seems sense to upgrade not only for the HD picture, but also the fact a rear projection isn’t the best type of tv for a games console, I struggle to see dark images against black in the day time. We both also like the Tv’s styling so i am not interested in any other make. But….

I have physical seen the PS42Q96HD model in a local store and am happy with it, but I can get the PS42Q97HDX much cheaper online and can’t find out the differences between the 2, the specs on Samsungs website show exactly the same specs. So what’s the difference?

I am guessing that the ‘x’ on the product code means its got an inbuilt digi tuner? I AM NOT BOTHERED ABOUT THIS.

I also know that you can get the tv in gloss and matt finish, is this the ‘6’ and ‘7’ change in the code? I WANT THE GLOSS ONE!

PS42Q97HDX is £765 (internet price, pick up from local (ish) store) I can’t tell if its gloss or not from the picture
PS42Q96HD is £823 (internet price free delivery only) This is the one I have seen and is £1000 in store.

If the ‘7’ means it’s the matt item then I will have to pay the extra £70+ for the gloss version ouch!

Can anyone here help me out here?

I think that the Q96 model is exlusive to DSG and otherwise identical to the Q97.

Are they definately both "Q"'s as Samsung also produce a "C" model which I believe is the same panel but with less picture processing and inputs.

what are my chances of walking into the one store and demanding the internet price they offer online?

i went in last week and asked what sort of deal they could do, he seemed really pleased that the half price tv stand was a good one, but considering i can save £200 on the tv and stand from their own website a £50 cash deal didnt seem that good at the time. They arnt the chepest online either, but as a main well known store i can always take the tv back to them if theres a problem, also i tend to trust them more as they have an actual store and not just internet based.

i dont want the hassle of having to pop home from work to meet the delivery guy if i order it over the net. For some reason the tv i want doesnt have 'reserve it at a local store to pick up' option on this model, yet the local store has them on the shelf!?

If so they aren't available for reserve and collect.

Yes it comes from the same stock but if its reserve and collected the online side takes the discount hit. If they match the price in store the store takes the discount hit.

So its to stop the store from having to match the price as it says in the price promise they match their own website, Except web exclusives.

And DSG have exclusive versions of most of Samsungs Tv's, check the difference though as their is usually a
slight cosmetic difference.

E.g The R73 LCD (DSG exclusive) has a slight blue trim at the bottom, the R74 version has a slight silver trim.

some store managers have been known to do it as a gesture of good will

its not a guaranteed "they will honour it" but more "its worth a shot"

As for samsung and DSG, they do have a reputation together. The R87 is a DSG exclusive, but otherwise the same as the R88. Same goes the M86, a DSG exclusive, but otherwise identical to the M87 bar a few cosmetic differences.

oh and the X refers to the TV being destined for internet sale. The model you've seen without an X was instore so wasnt the 'x'. But dont worry, its identical, the differences arent even mentioned on the website.

The D in the model number refers to "digital" and the fact they have freeview tuners. So all the models you've been looking at have freeview tuners.

well its all good news then. just popped into the store and the guy said no problems to matching their own online price. saved over 180 pounds. its also nice to know its got a digi tuner. result guys thanks

The C on the back of the tv at the end of the model number represents the panel.

C = CMO (Crappy one made by Chi Mei Optoelectronics)
S = S-PVA (Good Samsung Panel)
A = AUO (Also good panel, not sure who its made by though)

Thats for lcds, not plasmas.

would have been had this been an LCD we were talking about ;)

these are plasmas so most probably made by NEC
