Samsung QE43QN90A as a main monitor?

I was also looking to do the same but can’t find a definitive answer on it and most reviews are on the larger panels

If it really is 60hz then It seems the only options for a 43" 120hz+ non-oled are:

AORUS 43" FV43U 3840X2160 4K VA QUANTUM DOT 144HZ 1MS FREESYNC WIDESCREEN GAMING MONITOR

or

Gigabyte 43" 4K Ultra HD 144Hz VA HDR1000 Gaming Monitor LN117399 - FV43U

have you seen any other candidates?

Those "2" are the same one ;) (Aorus is Gigabyte's gaming brand).

What was it you went for?

I went for the Alienware Aw3821dw, but it isn't 4k - it's 3840x1600, so 4k width but ~25% shorter. I actually compared that with the FV43U side by side for a couple of days and while the HDR on the Aorus is better, I found the Alienware better in pretty much every other way that mattered to me

Faster and more responsive (no black smearing in fast motion)
Better viewing angles
Better anti-glare
Better stand/adjustment
Better support (next day doorstep exchange)
Better pixel layout (RGB)

The only downsides were HDR600 rather than the HDR1000 on the FV43U, and the lack of DSC meaning it is limited to 120hz when using 10 bit colour

To be honest, the reasons the Aorus didn't work for me were all down to the fact it's basically a gaming TV rather than a monitor, and depending on your viewing distance may not be an issue for you:

Size - I ended up with a sore neck after a few hours working on it due to the height, even though the Alienware is almost as wide, looking side to side is a lot less strain than up and down.
Viewing Angles - again related to size/distance (along with a limitation of va panels), the edges (particularly the lower corners) had visible colour shift which was very distracting.
Semi-glossy screen - nice and crisp, but my desk is right by a window, so I ended up with loads of glare :(
BGR pixel layout - improved massively by enabling Cleartype in Windows, but still not perfect.

If my usage was 90% gaming with a bit of office work and Web browsing etc. then it would have been a good option (although in that case a 42" OLED would be a better option), but for 8+ hours/day staring at text then no thanks.

I can imagine these issues would also be the case in any other VA based TV panel

However obviously if you want 4k then it's probably not going to be suitable!

Was interested in answer on this. Just checked with Samsung. The TV is 60Hz only and doesn't support Freesyn Premium pro. Their 120Hz displays are 55" or over. For Sammy, you'd have to look at something like the 49" G95T 5120x1440 for fast refresh rate etc

Some bigger displays/TVs use BGR instead of RGB pixel layout which can make text look a little odd if you are at regular monitor viewing distance (even with OS font rendering tweaks/Cleartype), they can also look a bit grainy if you are too close.

The only VA I've been happy with so far is the Philips Momentum series ones (though not the one used in the 55) - all the others I've noticed smearing or grainy trails eventually and once I see it can't "unsee" it.

Right ok thanks for the info, and to everyone else, bummer. It would have been nice to have mini-led with the samsung but I think the only decent op[tion now is the AORUS 43" FV43U.

VRR is basically a generic version of free/gsync, so yes, the same thing.

That is also a VA panel, so will have the same black smearing issues.

The problem you have is that 42-43" is on the low end of TVs, so you aren't going to get the big-budget high-end features, but is a very unusual size for a monitor, so your choice is very limited - whatever you get is going to end up being a compromise in some way :(

Yeah you're right, I actually think I will go for the 50” QN90A Neo QLED 4K for £999 then. Because correct me if I am wrong but that presumably has better all round picture quality than the Aorus 43" FV43U and the Sony 43" KD-43X85J(£600), and it will have better black levels due to the QLED (if thats the same thing as mini-led). But then again the Sony is £400 cheaper. If only Oled wasn't so fragile...
