I'm looking at getting a new 4K TV in the January sales, the Samsung QE55Q8FN has come up on RS as an option and I wondered if anyone had any thoughts or has one of these?

Also what would people suggest as a 55 inch TV around £1000-1200 - is there anything much better than the Samsung?

Ideally looking for a 4K TV to use with Plex, apple tv, and UHD BR discs.

that Samsung is edge lit the sony 55" xf90 would be a better buy, with full array local dimming and Dolby vision might drop too £1000 in the sales think it did during black Friday

edit my bad according to this review it is fald https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/q8fn-q8f-q8-2018

The XF90 is superior in terms of local dimming, out of the box calibration, and motion (this in particular is very important & a distinct difference). Considering you haven't mentioned PC usage or gaming, I wouldn't give the Q8FN a second thought over the XF90. It's usually cheaper as well, to boot.

Thanks gents, much appreciated!

I do like a little bit of PS4 and would look to upgrade to a Pro, but PC definitely not as I have a gsync monitor to use.

I’ll have to see if I can see the difference between a Q8 and the XF90 then to choose between them.

Anything else I should consider around this price point?

Buying TVs is so hard but you simply have to weigh up your preferences. Some will say contrast is most important so pick OLED. Others prefer brightened and subsequently increased HDR and pick LED. Then there’s the edge kit vs FALD argument and that really comes down to budget and screen size.

I have a KS8000 which is edge lit and there are times when it’s very distracting. Simple example when the PS4 logo pops up. However, for 90% of the time its something I don’t care about or notice. Depending on your room layout viewing angles are a real issue with LCD. With the screen being washed out although I saw a new 9 series QLED and that wasn’t so bad but had a hefty price tag.

Re OLED. I just bought an iPhone XS and can barely tell the difference between this AMOLED screen and my iPhone 6! Guess I’m not a purist! :o

Yeah if your spending £1200 there is only one choice
+1

windows shopping online - all I can see for next tier&sze (if prepared to loose a few ") down are £949 lewis 49"xf90 and £850 49fx750, rather than at 55" sony/pan all grouped at oled £1200 price-point. ... maybe have to hold your cards for new year sales ?

more inclined to go Pan, after the earlier thread and flatpanels review which shows sony FALD ony has <50 zones,
so not sure how that would deal with the stars in the sky on Gravity film or life-of-pie, but I suppose those are extreme cases

I picked up the Toshiba OLED for £999 recently and its just as good if not better picture wise than my 2016 LG OLED C6.

The 2018 LG panel used in the toshiba are definitely brighter than the 2016 model.

I have I paired with an Apple 4k tv box and it plays beautifully with this and the toshiba supports DOLBY VISION too.

Currently watching Dr No in 4k and its never looked so good.
