I'm considering buying one of these Samsung S2 external drivers to take traveling with me to store backups etc and was hoping to get peoples opinion on the drive or possibly get recommendations for alternatives as I've read it has some bad read and write rates.

But I do really need a small and lightweight drive thats not too expensive, has a large capacity and is relatively durable (It will be padded well in a backpack but will probably take the odd bump or two).

So what are peoples thoughts on this drive?

get a caddy and a normal internal drive :)
If its only usb-2 then it doesnt matter about read/write speeds as it will only ever get sustained at around 20-30mbps max

I was considering this option has I'm going to have to sell my PC and have several internal drives I could use. Never used a caddy before but should they be okay to just throw in a drive that already has data on it and swap drives in it now and again? That would work out as a lot cheaper option but at same time a larger and heavier one.

*Edit*

Forgot to mention I do not want to have to carry an second power supply so it needs to be able to be power over usb.

you can put basically any drive into a caddy and swap it whenever you want, it gets picked up just like a normal external one (its all they are, they are just assembled) except its over usb/esata. You can get 2.5" caddies, tough ones as well, which are USB bus powered and dont need a plug. AFAIK all 3.5 ones need power.
Obviously if you get a 2.5" caddy you need a 2.5 drive.

While I used to swaer by Icybox caddies, both the 2.5" ones ive had have broken, first one the USB socket got a bent/snapped pin in it (esata still works) and second one a screw hole has lost all its thread. So I now just go for one that looks nice and has all the things I need.

I have the 640GB S2, I really like it, it's the perfect size, smaller than an others I've found.

But I have had one fail (within warranty Luckily).
