Hi all,

I Have A Samsung Spinpoint 1TB Hard Drive And I Believe I Am Having An Overheating Problem.

I Have Copied Approximatly 120 Gig From My One Drive To The Spinpoint 1TB And All Goes Fine Until About 10 Minutes Into The Copy Process..

I Should Say I Have Run HD Tach And Get Approximatly 240 Mb/S On This Drive.

The Files Start To Copy Over To The Spinpoint And It Says To Copy 120mb It Will Take About 20 To 25 Minutes.. It Then Starts To Copy Perfectly Fine Until About 10 Minutes Into The Copy And Then The Time Goes Up To 9 Hours+.

I Then Stop The Copy Process And There Is Not hard Drive Activity At All.

I Then Run HD Tach Again And It Then Says That The Speed Is Only 4.4 mb/S.

If I Then Leave The Drive To Cool Down By Turning Off The Pc And Leaving It An Hour Then The Drive Is Completly Fine Again Until I Try And Copy The Files Again And Then The Same Problems Occur..

Can Anyone Help Me Out With This Problem As Its Really Starting To P**s Me Off..

Thanks For Any Help Guys

Kingy

P.S Forgot To Add I Have A Well Ventilated Case And It Doesnt Happen To Any Of The Other Hard Drives In The PC

Right ive run the temperature program and its running at 40oC when its copying large files across.

I have just done exactly the same procedure as my orignal post and after 10 minutes or so it goes mega slow..

I run the HD Tach or HD Tune and its showing 4.5mb/s transer rate..

If I leave the machine off for a hour or so and try again the speed test programs run at full speed..

But if i do the same copying procedure again then after 10 mins or so the same problem occurs and when speed checked its back to 4.5mb/s transfer speed.

Its gotta be the hard drive overheating thats causing this problem.

I have had the drive in my pc and then hanging outside on top of the case and *** problem is always the same.

40 degrees is nothing im afraid. Hard drvies go up to 55 quite happily. Do a full scandisk / checkdisk and run the drive diagnostic tools from the manufacturer. How full is the disk each time you copy?

Everything passes with full colours using the samsung diagnostic software.

Its also a fresh format as well so nothing on the drive until i start to copy across.

Theres about 120 gig I need to transfer.

Just tried again after running the diag software and still the same

my F1 1tb is the coolest of all my drives ive had of the past few years thats had a temp diode in it (matrox 200gb , Seagate 10 500gb and the F1 1TB) but yours is running a little hotter than mine i sure mie run about 20c idle but ill check when im hope. but 40c is not high for a HD warm yes but nothing to worrie about

I have the same motherboad as well and had used 4gb crucial with the two. have u got the samsung as the primary ? , ACHI on in the bios (if not it mite be in IDE mode still and not sata), try doing a full pass with scandisc in windows . Are you running vista ? if so give SP1 a spin

No The Samsung Is Currently Being Used As A Storage Drive And Therefore Is Slave.
Did A Full Pass With Scandisc And All 'A OK'
Yes Im Running Vista And Already Have SP1 Running With It.

Just Tried The Same Things As Before And All Ok Then After 10-15 Mins Back To The Same Problem Until I Turn Off The Pc And Let It Cool Down Then Its All Ok After An Hour Or So

Very weird. Mine is the coolest drive I've ever head not going over 27* whilst 2 others (Hitachi & Seagate) both go to 40*. Maximum I've ever seen on an hdd is 55* and it was still doing great so something's definitely not right.

Just tried to put the ACHI on in the bios and when ive save it and the machine reboots it just flashes up with the blue screen of death and starts all over again.

ive never had a problem before with any other hard drives in my machine only this one.

Its set to ide mode and is working fine on all drives apart from this 1tb one.

You can't just chop and change between IDE mode and AHCI. Windows uses a different driver for each mode so if you try and run in a mode other than the one you installed Windows using the system will BSOD.

It sounds like the drive is dropping down into PIO mode due to repeated transfer errors. Start by changing the SATA cable.

That was the first thing I originally did was to change the sata cable and it made no difference and also it was purchased to put inside an Ice Box Internal Caddy which has sata cable permanently connected inside the caddy

Any ideas why it would drop out to pio if it hasnt done it on any other hard drive that ive installed in my machine?

Thanks

thats beucse the ACHI drivers were not install when windows xp was

my drive is idle atm @ 24c , is it in a caddy now/ has it allways been ? if so take it out try pluging it in as normal would make sence thats why is abit warm , also it mie be somthing liek the controller chip on the caddy don't like the F1 .

its worth a shot

Ive plugged it directly into the motherboard using a normal sata cable and have had it ouside the machine so that its not enclosed and also used the caddy with the permanantly fixed sata cable.

Problem is still the same whatever I do.

Ive also got a Samsung Spinpoint F1 640GB as my main drive and dont have any problems with that if i copy the files to that drive..

Ive also swapped the drives about on my machine into different sata ports and still no joy..

My Sammy 1TB runs at around 29-30C so 40C does sound a bit high.

Interesting. I noticed a while ago that my drive is stuck in PIO Mode 4 and won't change to DMA mode. My other drive works fine in DMA. The drive isn't my main OS/Apps one and still flies in terms of transfer speeds so I've not been too bothered by it but do you reckon it could be something to do with the cable?

Windows will reduce the transfer rate if it detects too many errors between the drive and controller but there could be all manner of things causing it.

If you delete the offending controller in Device Manager then reboot and let Windows redetect it DMA should be re-enabled.
