Samsung SSD 840 pro errors when running specific test

I have 2x Samsung SSD 840 pro and the disks are running fine in normal operation.

But if I do a benchmark with IO meter on any of the new 840 pro drives, the drive die/freeze, so that only PC reboot gets it back to life.
I know this test is not a real life situation, but the combination could hapen.

If I do the test on any other HDD i own there is no problem. If I do test on OCZ vertex 3 or OCZ agility 3 also no problem. Even if I do test on Samsung 840 non pro version the test is OK. Just 840 pro with the latest firmware at the time has this issue.

So I would like anyone that has 840 pro SSD to try the simple IO meter test with the following settings and report back, so if the problem is greater than just me Samsung will do something about the issue:

Download I/O meter tool:
link to download

Set the test....
- 1 manager (allready added by default)
- 4 workers (delete or add with buttons on toolbar)
- On Disk targets tab select each workerand set:
---- Maximum Disk Size --> 5000000 sectors (2,5 GB test file)
---- #of outstanding I/Os --> 8
- On Access specifications use allready cofigured test --> All in one (click on each worker to check if the test is added)
- Test setup tab
---- Run Time --> set to 2 minutes
- Results display tab (optional)
---- Set Update frequency to 5 seconds, so you can see IOPS and notice IOPS falling when disk fails/stalls

Try to run the test and after finishing if it doesn't freeze run the test again. This will deffinitly cause the disk freeze/PC errors.

EventID 129: Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.
Multiple EventID 153: The IO operation at logical block address xxxxx for Disk 3 was retried

I tested on:
OS: Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows server 2012
Chipset: Intel Z86 or Z77
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-M pro, ASROCK H77 Pro4-m, Gigabyte GA-Z68MA..
Raid mode: I tried RAID and AHCI
Drivers: Built in windows or Intel RST

I carried the disk in to the shop, so they can test the disk..
The result is that my disks on their motherboard (Asrock B75) is working the same as any other new 840 pro with the test.

When running the test they get IO meter application as (not responding). The same as with my motherboards with difference that after ~5 minutes test completes on B75.

In reality the test is set to 1 minute. So it should complete in 1 minute exactly.

The service guy told me that he didn't pay attention to the test the whole time as he was doing other stuff, so not sure about times anf benchmark results.

If anyone will do the test my result is arround 8000 IOPS if test completes succesfully.

hmm i didnt get any crashes worked fine, im just trying to find a program to view the file it gave me

Oh nvm it shows me on the dispaly results tab, i got 5619 Total I/O per second 74 MBs and 5.6 ms average response time

Did you try to run the test at least two times? Does the test finish in two minutes as it should or is it stuck at one second remaining for some time? Can you write down the exact part number and firmware? Do you have SATA set to AHCI or anything else?

Thank you

I had asrock Z77 board runing as NAS, so i decided to turn it off and do the windows 8 install on it and try the test since you got it working on your z77.

At first I run the test on crean install with some old bios. And the test failed as usual.
Then I updated the BIOS and installed intel 11.7 drivers. The test passes on this board without any problems 3 times(didn't reboot the pc)

So I uninstalled RST software and driver, reboot and run the test again. And the test failed.
Then I reinstalled the RST again, reboot and the test always fails again.

Was it just luck that the test passed 3 times in a row.... I mean in all the tests I have done on any board maybe I got the test to finish few times on first run.

Anyway in the end the disk still hangs when running the test even on Z77 board.

If I'm doing something wrong please correct me. But if i run the test on any other drive it works without problems. So I still blame my two 840 pro drives.

I ran the test 3 times its a sata 840 pro, im using windows7 on a gigabyte z77x uhd5 im using the latest intel drivers using the intel sata, i dont know where to find the firmware the drive is using though, if ya could tell me where to look ill find that out for ya.

I hope this helps

Thanks BluD for your efford.
I'm trying to get the old one but I think that all new ones has the new version. I wrote to supplier, but I doubt it. Maybe If someone else on the forum could try the test with updated firmware.

Oki i updated firmware since ya didnt seem to have any luck finding anyone else who might have done it already, im now getting 5338 I/OsPS 68 MBPS and 5.9 Average response time after 2 runs.

Seems to be slightly slower now than before, but still runs ok.

I tried it once with a 256GB 840 Pro and it locked up. I'm not going to try it again as the drive briefly went missing and screwed up the bios boot order.

Gigabyte Z77 motherboard, current firmware and drivers for everything (AFAIK).

Thank you both for trying. I have the same problem as drive goes missing from device manager and when it locks up if I do just hard reset on the HW reset button I don't see the drive at all after booting. I need to shutdown the PC then I see it again.

As I tried this so many times I just unplug power connector from the drive when it freezes :) It is also true that I don't use the 840 pro as OS drive because of the locking.

Bremen1874, does your drive otherwise works OK or you have any PC freezing or something like that?

does it only lock up with the io meter test? if so it could be buggy software,if its working fine for everything else I wouldn't worry too much
