Only if you had two identical systems, one with 1st gen other with 2nd gen drives in. For OS use, the extra cost associated with the 2nd gen drives means unless you have money to burn, get the 1st gen and spend the money you save on something else, or a newer, faster, bigger SSD in a couple of years time when they've become mainstream.
That's unless you use it for something needing fast transfer rates, such as if you frequently copy very large files on and off the drive, for example in video editing.
Just be sure to avoid a JMicron drive - all Samsungs are fine.
