Samsung vs WD

I am planning on replacing my HD and was considering either the Hd501LJ or the SE16 What would be the better buy.

One other thought to discussions in this board is that there is or is no debatable difference in using raid so would it be better to use a single WD 1T that's on offer this week and use my external drive for backup.

At the end of the day I want the quickest solution for mainly gaming purposes with backup/redundency. My Asus Commando supports raid 10 so would 4 of either the above be an over spend to using Raid 1 and external back up.

Hopefully the post is not to confusing as I am:D

4x 1TB is a lot of money. I would go with WD, samsung not been in the game long enough to get my respect ;)

Thanks for the reply but i did not explain that well but I was wondering the performance difference between a 1tb hd or between 2x500g in raid 0 with the option of using 4 of those in raid 10 but that seema a no brainer when I use my external drive for a fresh system backup with a couple of my current online games, so what would be the better solution for a gaming rig?

The raid0 is going to be faster, on the otherhand has (theoretically) 2x the chance of failure, and 1tb is a lot to lose.

For a gaming rig, more smaller drives would be faster, if you are wanting all out speed

I have 2 of the "Samsung SpinPoint T 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD501LJ)" hard drives (not in a raid setup) and they are performing amazingly. They are very quiet and I have had no problems whatsoever with them. Definitely recommended.

I previously had a couple of Samsungs in my system the 160GB ones HD160JJ and replaced it with a new 500GB WD. Whisper quiet and noticably faster than the samsungs.

Have a 320Gb Samsung and 2x 500Gb Samsungs (not raided). Cant fault them. Extremely quiet and pleanty fast. Also run pretty cool.

My bros WD 250gb is loud, you can hear it tapping away sometimes.
I purchased the WD based on the comments people say: They are silent and reliable which is what I wanted.

So my next HDD purchase will be from the SAMSUNG range.

I really rate the Samsung drives, they are silent and reliable. I have just bought a new 1tb drive and its one of the new WD 'green' type - it say this range is as quiet as the Samsungs. The standard WD drives arent so quiet however.

they're both top manufacturers

samsung are a bit quieter
wd are a bit quicker

i use both manufacturers depending on what the drives will be used for.

i wouldn't touch any other manufacturer with a condom
