Hi guys, I got my Camera over summer and spent a lot of time in fields taking pictures of cows.

Now I want to go a little closer to home, I live about 2 minutes walk from the beach, I know of plenty of interesting things I can take photos of. But the weather is turning, it's windy as hell at the moment and i'm scared of sand getting blown in to my lense and damaging it.

Is this likely to happen? Obviously I will be trying my best to keep sand out (Standing with the wind behind me etc)

But any other advice you can give me on keeping my camera safe outside would be great.

Best advice would be not to change lenses while on the beach and to get a skylight or uv filter for which ever lens you will be using, so as to not get sand or scratches on the glass of the lens itself.

These filters screw into the 'front' end of the lens and can be interchanged. Many people on the boards including myself keep a skylight filter attached to protect the lens because they don't really affect the picture quality or colour/lighting etc. *Disclaimer: debatable but not for this thread*

Because lenses have different diameters you will need the filter that will fit your specific lens. That's not to say that a 50mm lens needs a 50mm filter because that defines the focal length of the lens and not it's diameter. There should be a reference to what diameter ( Ø ) the lens is either on the lens or with any documentation you have that came with it. Failing that let us know on here which lens you have and we should be able to help.

Filters range in price from under a fiver to over £35 but skylight and UV filters are usually around £10 to £15. Some good brands to look at are conklin or Hoya.

Hope that helps.

Hey mate,

Based on a photo I found of the finepix S5600 you need a 55mm diameter filter (Ø 55mm) Have a look at the front of your lens where it says something like 10x optical f=6.3-63mm 1:3.2-3.5 Ø 55mm if it has a different number after the Ø then you need that diameter filter.

I remember that I saw somewhere you could get a set with ND, polarising and UV filters in for cheap. It's worth getting the polarising and using that as well if you want to take pictures on the beach/of water without the glare.
