Sandy Bridge Dated

Been reading around on sandy bridge and it seems Intel are taking an approach to locking CPU's. Meaning no one can overclock by raising the BLCK but they are releasing premium K versions which have an unlocked multiplier but at a premium cost which isn't very mainstream friendly which is what the platform was mean't to be aimed at ::rolls eyes:: seeing a lot of people switching to AMD at some point in time.

Have to see when it comes out, if the above is true.

I've heard that the next generation of Intel chips will be impossible to overclock for every generation since c2d. I suspect the trend goes back earlier than this too.

Don`t worry, Intel won`t disable overclocking on their CPUs completely as that would be a stupid and foolish thing to do, though it may be true they are limiting overclocking on their low end to mid range processors.

Oh great. It's bad enough trying to explain to people now the difference between 1156 and 1366 i7's and why they don't work in both sockets let alone having another socket with the same i5/i7 moniker cpu's. What a lash up!!

If they all had USB 3.0/SATA 6 (properly on the chipset) and UEFI then it'd be half tempting, but from what previews I've seen it's a bit of a mixed mess still.

Seriously needs better consistency for a 2011 line-up :s

I've been waiting for ages for Sandy Bridge and was hoping they would push it forward to December, but this news actually sounds like aren't too keen on that. So when do we get to buy this brilliant chip?

And there was me getting ready to ditch the idea of getting an Q6600 and going all out on an i5 system before Christmas... Seems that I am better off waiting to see what Sandy Bridge has to offer and the possible price drops in the New Year with i5/i7 hardware.:D

What I can't understand is how such a big corporation can miss the Xmas sales window. Perhaps someone from marketing or sales can shed some light on this. Why wouldn't they try their hardest to make sure they have whatever new tech available before Xmas so they can capitalise on people spending loads of money? Surely bringing it after Xmas is going to hurt the sales as people will have overspent already.

There must be a reason - and suggesting that they couldn't is unlikely in my opinion.

I'm only partially excited over the first batch of processors. I'm not sure if these are meant to 'out-do' the current i7 chips. Though they'll give us an idea of what can be done with this new archtecture, which has me interested as I'm most excited about the Ivy Bridge CPUs - I expect (well, hope) them to be performance beasts.
