sandybridge vs haswell

I just went from a SB at 4.6ghz everyday use to a 4770k clocked the same and I am happy with it. Seem to have got a nice little boost in my 3 fav games-Starcraft ,COH 2 and dawn of war 2. Havnt done benches yet to tell you numbers but it feels smoother for sure and it is also letting my 7970 crossfire cards off their leash a bit more.

If you've got a decent overclocking 2500K going to Haswell won't be much of an upgrade and if you a poor clocker, potentially won't be an upgrade at all.

If your sb was an i5 chip, the switch to an i7 will explain the better gpu performance. Got the same effect by switching from an i5 3570k to the cpu in sig. For someone though who's already on a 26/700k i dont think it's a worthwhile move.

+1, can you not improve your 2500k build with upgrading component's instead or have you the upgrade itch?

OP is on a 2500k so a move to a 4770k will definitely offer better performance in certain games/apps.

Also as someone stated if he intends to SLI/Xfire it will offer better gpu utilisation.

Game wise, there are a few that show gains with hyperthreading, it's a very useful feature too for encoding work. Indeed, sli was my reason for switching to an i7 as the cards werent being utilised fully. For single card gaming though, a 2500k is still a good cpu.

Yeah definitely. It depends what he uses his PC for and what games he plays and if he intends to upgrade to SLI/Xfire. Judging by the GPU in his sig it is doubtful an upgrade to Haswell will offer much.

I would say most are happy with their upgrade. People like to upgrade and a 4.6ghz 4770k is still faster than my old 2600k at 5ghz
z. If you are upgrading because its what you like, you will be happy as its a solid chip but if you are upgrading to gain a lot of performance then then you probs wont be as pleased. I personally like to upgrade but to be honest I am pleased on both fronts. I us 7970 crossfire as well though so the pci-e 3.0 was a good reason for me to purchase.

Hope that is a bit clearer :)

I upgraded to Haswell from a solid 2500K partly because I wanted to move to micro ATX and didn't want to buy a new motherboard that wasn't the latest tech. So I sold my old board and CPU, which offset it nicely. Also I use Linux a huge amount, and there is a lot of potential for big gains on Haswell.

Well, Ivy was barely any faster than Sandy and now Haswell barely any faster than Ivy. Also, hyperthreading doesn't do much in games. So it's a bit of a waste of time and money in my opinion. I will certainly be hanging on to my 2500k for a couple more years. Depends how much your money means to you and how much it's burning a hole in your pocket I guess :p

I have built a couple of 4770k/780 gtx pc's and gaming I can't tell the difference between my 2500k and them.

If you are just gaming I would not bother upgrading and wait and see what happens later in the year.

So whats the consensus on upgrading to haswell if you got a sandybridge-k.

Waste of money or worth it upgrade?
Depend on what sort of games you play mainly really.

For demanding games in general, you will see more performance gain upgrading from your 7850 to faster card than the CPU; however, if you play CPU demanding games more, then upgrading to the Haswell might give you around 20% boost in frame rate (i.e. SC2 25fps to 30fps)
