Sanity Check

The graphics score in the second image is 19,269. In the review I took the first image from they only list the graphics performance and not the overall score (15,783 in the second image).

So 1070 Max-Q GPU score = 15,748
1080 Max-Q GPU score = 18,120
Full 1070 GPU score = 19,269

So the Max-Q 1070 underperforms by around 20%.

My advice would be to find the aesthetics you like and get the 1060 full card version if there is one. It should perform roughly the same as the 1070 Max-Q at a lower cost.

Would a monitor hood help for your pc?

You could always knock something up yourself to see if it would help rather than buying one.

Thanks for this mate, it’s a great idea. I’m experimenting with some blackout theatre material at the minute to see if I can make a collapsible hood. It’s a great idea, but at £62 and 3.5 stars I think you’re right, I’ll have to see what it benefits it’ll bring first.

A gaming laptop still makes sense for the amount of time I’m away from the house though, but you’ve made my decision harder for sure :D

Thanks for clearing that up. The 1060 desktop (6gb) seems to score around the 14,200, meaning the 1070 Max Q is around 10% faster with a tdp of 30-40w less and a minimum of 2gb more ram. Whilst the full 1060 may offer bang for buck, it does seem the 1070 max q is a better card.

The 1070 Max Q also seems to perform around 5% better than my gtx 980, which frankly blows my mind!

Is cost the main factor for you that makes the 1060 a better proposition?

I can’t believe the performance you can get from a laptop these days; I was hoping for a sensible size for games on lower settings. Instead it’s AAA titles On High/Ultra, it’s almost obscene.

Coming from a 60hz 1200p monitor the higher pixel density and refresh rate will be excellent too. Great for travel and avoiding the glare.

I may even sell my current rig and connect the laptop to the monitor for desktop gaming until I upgrade next year. I’ll be putting in a 1tb 960 evo, and a USB-C hub would take care of the peripherals and display very neatly...

I think you’ve helped me make up my mind, thanks chaps!

Yes, along with overclocking headroom if required.

Thanks for your input mate. Are you pleased with your (more powerful) setup?

Very much so.

100fps on the 120Hz display is stunning.

I’m really looking forwards to Ampere/Volta in a laptop married to 144Hz IPS display.
