My partner's son wants to go to an event in the middle of July (Gary's Picnic or something like that) however we also have a 1 and a half year old. I'm really wondering how noisy it gets? As I don't really won't to damage 1.5 yr olds hearing.

I got taken to a GP, in the days of turbo's, at the age of 6 and found the cars exceedingly noisy (to the point it wasn't fun). Really, just wondering how the little lad would fair, as I've never been to a drag race before.

Cheers

It is very noisy, if you can persuade the nipper to wear ear defenders - fine, otherwise - I'd wouldn't take the risk personally.

It's not too bad if you are at the top of the hill. Or if it gets too much for him you could take him away from the track. Ear defenders are a good idea though.

It's much much louder than any GP racing I've seen, but it's all over in a few seconds and not all the cars are that loud. Most are just noisy. Never did me any harm at that age. Pardon? :D

Fingers in ears or stick some ear defenders on him, you can get them up there.

My ears are OK and I have been doing motorbike road races (very close proximity to very loud bikes, especially the boring old classics!) from a young age, and mine are ok!, it is loud, but I'd doubt it would get damaging, ear defenders *** better safe than sorry.

Garys Picnic shouldnt have that many 'full on' drag cars there, as its more aimed at the Hot Rod side of the sport http://www.rodandcustom.co.uk/ad_garyspicnic.html weve been taking ours from an early age, and they dont have a problem with wearing ear defenders... though the youngest does have a problem with trying to climb over the fence next to the track

Went to the summer nationals and that was flaming loud! top fuel.... jet car.. funny car... basically the crazy ones!

There was very young children there and especially around the 2-3 year old mark wearing ear defenders.

however.. Garys Picnic will be a quiet event so it wont be extremely noisy, but still ear defenders is a must for the little one

Thanks guys,

Think as it's a 'relatively' quiet event we'll all go, armed with ear defenders for sure. Hope they've improved from the ones I had as a 6 yr old. Assumed there'd be 5000Hp monsters there and very noisy - what are the hot rod's like? Over-tuned road cars with 500-1000Hp?

Yeah, big V8's with nitrous, superchargers, bright paint jobs etc. The kids will love 'em

Well, the gates open at 8am - any ideas when the racing starts? It'll take us 1.5hrs to get there.

Hazarding a guess I would say 9 / 9.30 / 10.00 - if the tracks dry (which looking out the window it should be!!) and prepped...even if you get there before the racing starts you can still get up close and personal to the cars in the pits anyway :D
