Santander... :(

I've had it with Santander as they messed everything up for me. They cocked up a standing order, took more money than they should have, about £200. Then they said they'd reverse it, which they did, only to take the money back 2 weeks later. This made me go overdrawn and thus charged me for it. I now have the 200 back but they seemed to ignore my letter of complaint and still haven't returned my charges.

Needless to say my account now lies inactive until I find the time to close it. It makes me sick that they didn't even have the courtesy to respond to my letter of complaint. Idiots.

You can refer it to the ombudsman - however the quickest way to resolve it would be send a recorded letter to Santander. Ask them to acknowledge receipt within 5 working days, and to give you a timescale to investigate your complaint. Make it clear in the letter that this is the last time you will contact them to resolve it, and that you will next go to the ombudsman. I'm pretty sure they'll refund you. If it goes to the ombudsman and he finds in your favour they get a charge.

They tried to charge me £200 for having +97p in my account. I stopped using the account and I left it for over a year and they eventually sent me a letter saying they are dropping the charges on the account. Never using Santander again!

I deal more or less with four banks and Santander gives me more reasons to contact them than the other three together. I once had my balance exactly at 0 in my current account but it suddenly showed me -1 later at the same day. I had no direct debits or purchases due to be taken out so I phone them up. Although they couldnt tell me what it was(yes...weird), I had the -1 miraculously disappear soon after that. Following the takeover of Abbey, I kept seeing buggy bits and pieces happening with my internet banking too.

They sort their acts out when you contact them but they definitely need to do better than that. Mind you, altogether 6 people left our company to go and work for them (dont know if they helped each other or got them separately) and they were all such that I would have sacked if it was down to me(2 of them barely spoke English anyway). Good luck to them but, after observing that, it makes me a bit uncertain about the kind of service that I would get within a branch.

i have a similar problem with them at the moment

i purchased some computer parts on the 24th of december plus petrol and a few other things i then had money in my account to cover it but on my santander online they took it out on the 27th not on the 24th ??? nothing ever shows up immedialtey its always a day or 2 later on the website but i defo had enough to cover it all.

so i had spent a little in between the 24th and the 27th but still had enough to cover it according to my accoutn online then bam on the 27th they decided to do all the tranactions all equating into being overdrawn ?

how does that work i payed for it all on the 24th not the 27th ?

That's just the way card transactions work.

When you make a card transaction the money is not deducted right away. All they do is authorise it - mainly to make sure that the card is valid, also to make sure you have the money. The bank will set aside the money at that point, but unless the retailer processes it completely it will not come off your account until a day or 3 later. That happened with you, and it was the right thing to happen.

My wifes account with Alliance & Leicester now Santander. We have had no problems at all. We still only get charge the Alliance & Leicester agreed overdraft fee, £5 max per month.

We applied for a Santander credit card a year ago for holiday, rang up a week after the application, spent time on hold, made more calls over the next 3 or 4 weeks....no cards ever received. Bizarre eh :p

I will give that a try. Just have to go back through everything to check the dates and amounts now!

Cheers for the advice.
